Newcastle United’s midfield unit remains unfinished with less than two weeks left in the transfer window, as Matthias Jaissle still needs to reshape a squad that lost Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer.
The Magpies have explored several different profiles, from experienced Premier League options such as Bayern’s Joao Palhinha to Tottenham youngster Lucas Bergvall. Their search has now taken them to Germany and another player already very familiar to Newcastle’s new head coach.
Sky Germany’s
Philipp Hinze reported that Newcastle has enquired about RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald, who previously spent two seasons playing under Jaissle at Red Bull Salzburg.
“Newcastle United have enquired about Nicolas Seiwald,” Hinze reported. “Magpies are interested in the Austrian midfielder.”
Jaissle’s relationship with the 25-year-old appears to be a significant part of Newcastle’s interest. Seiwald made 91 appearances under the German across their time together at Salzburg, and Hinze reported that the Newcastle head coach remains an admirer.
“Manager Matthias Jaissle is a fan of the 25-year-old, who is firmly part of Leipzig’s plans,” Hinze reported.
That final point, however, could represent the major obstacle to Newcastle completing a deal if the club decides to pursue it. Leipzig does not appear to be actively considering Seiwald’s departure, and there is no indication yet that Newcastle has submitted a formal offer or begun negotiations over a transfer.
“Seiwald is on Newcastle’s radar, but nothing more has happened so far,” Hinze reported.
Seiwald would provide considerably more experience than several of Newcastle’s summer recruits, and he has a market value of just €25 million, although that figure could increase quickly if Leipzig isn’t interested in selling the player. The Austria international has made 105 appearances for Leipzig since joining the Bundesliga club in 2023 and has earned 51 senior caps for his country, scoring once.
Would Seiwald be a better addition than Newcastle’s other midfield targets, or should the club prioritize someone else from the Bundesliga or with Premier League experience? Let us know in the comments section below.
