Marquette men’s soccer remains inexplicably undefeated on the season.
The lack of a result this past weekend is explicable, as Marquette canceled all home athletic events due to the tragic death of two men’s lacrosse players. What happened with David Korn’s team before that is the part that is inexplicable, as they had no business beating North Florida or tying Drake in back-to-back matches for two completely different reasons, but those things still happened. MU probably shouldn’t have gone to a scoreless
draw with Bradley in the opener either, but that’s the way it went.
All of that combines to see the Golden Eagles at 2-0-2 going into Saturday’s home match at Valley Fields. That contest has the possibility to be the first time all season that Marquette has played a normal 90 minutes of soccer with the full compliment of players they expected to have at the start of the year. Justin Milovanov and Andreas Fotland picked up red cards in Match #1 and Match #3 of the year, so between playing without them for the rest of those matches and then the ensuing suspensions for the next games, that’s how you get four matches in and MU still hasn’t gone a full 90 looking like Korn might have thought that they were going to look.
And yet, somehow, through all of that, undefeated.
On top of all of this, Saturday’s match will be Marquette’s final tune-up before Big East play arrives on the calendar. Next Friday brings MU’s first road trip of the match in the form of the conference opener at Creighton. There’s still three more non-conference matches to be played after that — well, at least three, we’ll see if the Wisconsin match gets rescheduled? — but the beginning of the quest for a conference tournament berth is right around the corner. The whole “haven’t played a proper 90 minutes yet” thing is probably not a great thing for Marquette this close to Big East play, but the flip side of that is the Golden Eagles playing through a lot of on-field adversity to get to 2-0-2.
Hopefully, we get a nice, clean, normal 90 minutes on Saturday, and it ends with high fives and handshakes from the guys in blue and gold.

This is the first ever meeting between Marquette and Lipscomb.
Lipscomb comes into Saturday’s contest winless in their last two matches. The loss in that pairing has more to do with the schedule than anything else, as they lost 4-0 on the road against then-#7 Wake Forest. The Bisons got outshot 25-3 and the thing only went to 4-0 because of a goal that went through in the 88th minute. Their most recent match was a 1-1 draw with Georgia State, and Lipscomb’s probably salty about that. They took the lead on a 10th minute goal from Diego Ramirez, but as the second half wore on, the Bisons only attempted two shots in the entire 45 minutes. Both came past the 75 minute mark, but that wasn’t enough offensive pressure to counter Georgia State pushing for a goal and eventually, on their eighth shot of the half, they found the equalizer in the 88th minute.
I would very much like it if Marquette did not rely on an 88th minute goal to decide this match.
Even with that Wake Forest match heavily tilting the table, Lipscomb is still getting outshot pretty badly on average this season. Opponents are getting 16.6 attempts per match, while the Bisons are only getting off 7.8 shots. If you throw out that Wake contest, those averages are 14.5 against and 9.0 for. That still seems like a situation that Marquette and their 14.0 for/7.5 against averages can take advantage of at some point in a 90 minute match.
The aforementioned Diego Ramirez is tied for the team lead in goals with two, as he’s matched by Levi Jones. A weird note: Both of those guys have only started one time this season for Lipscomb and given that they’re 450 minutes into their season, it’s a little surprising that neither one has played more than 200 of them. Part of that is Ramirez missing the August 31st match against Mercer — Lipscomb’s only win of the year, by the way — but he’s played 35 and 51 minutes in their last two contests. Jones has the team lead in points thanks to one of their seven assists on the year, and he’s tied with Josiah Green and Luke Hanlon for the team lead in shots with five each. Feels like they should have at least one guy averaging more than one shot per match, but here we are.
Alex Kara is their keeper, starting every match and playing every minute. That Wake Forest match did not do his goals-against average any favors nor did the 4-1 loss to South Florida, as he’s letting in two goals every 90 minutes. That’s bad, but the 6’4” redshirt sophomore from Kentucky is stopping over 73% of shots on goals. That number went up in a big way on Monday night against Georgia State, as he made nine saves on 10 shots on goal.
