The No. 11 Texas Longhorns almost choked away another much-needed win against the then-No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels, but one drive changed the course of the game for Texas, breaking the seal on the offense and giving them enough to avoid another complete meltdown. Now, they face a hobbled Mississippi State Bulldogs team floundering after the loss of quarterback Kamario Taylor, one of the brightest stars of the early season.
The Bulldogs flew to a 4-0 record largely thanks to Taylor’s offensive prowess, but
have dropped three straight contests by a combined 110-38. Jeff Lebby’s offense has struggled without its elite trigger man, teams have contained dynamic running back Fluff Bothwell, while the defense hasn’t kept opponents out of the end zone with any consistency.
Teams have had their way with the Mississippi State defense, giving up an average of 267 yards through the air and 124 on the ground. In the lopsided loss to the Crimson Tide, the Bulldogs allowed 179 rushing yards and four touchdowns, while the Sooners rushed for 184 — eclipsing 85 yards for the first time since the start of conference play.
Texas seemingly found some of its identity against Ole Miss, with Raleek Brown rushing for 157 yards on a 6.83 yards-per-carry clip, with short-yardage specialist Michael Terry racking up 41 yards and a score on just eight carries. Can the offense continue that pace against the Bulldogs or will they have another rocky performance in SEC play?
