The Colorado Rockies are set to hire Paul DePodesta as their president of baseball operations, per the Athletic.
This would not be that surprising if this were being done a decade ago. DePodesta was one Billy Beane’s top lieutenants with the Oakland A’s beginning in 1999, and was featured prominently in Michael Lewis’s book Moneyball, as well as in the subsequent movie, where he was portrayed by Jonah Hill. DePodesta was hired by the Los Angeles Dodgers as their general manager in February, 2004,
but was fired in October, 2005. He then spent time in the front offices of the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets.
However, DePodesta hasn’t worked in baseball since January, 2016, when the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League hired him away from the Mets to be the team’s chief strategy officer. DePodesta has held that position with the Browns ever since.
The Rockies have been a trainwreck of an organization for years. Since 2011, they’ve only made the playoffs, or finished above .500, twice — in 2017 and 2018. They haven’t won more than 68 games since 2021, and have lost 100+ games each of the past three seasons, including going 43-119 in 2025.
The last paragraph in the Athletic article linked above is interesting:
DePodesta was last made available to Cleveland reporters in late March 2022, about two weeks after the Browns’ trade for Watson.
