Tommy Castellanos is continuing to work back from a vicious hit in Florida State’s loss to Stanford, one that compounded the lingering issues the quarterback had been dealing with over the past few weeks. Head coach Mike Norvell told local media on Wednesday that he was confident in how the quarterback was trending, as well as speaking on how Castellanos and the offense have been dealing with ankle issues:
I’m feeling very confident where it’s trending, but obviously we’ll be able to get a little
bit more as we get later on in the week. I think he’s handled the things he’s been asked to do very well.
I think there’s things that you try to be aware of just in all situations, and Tommy, he’s done a really good job of getting himself prepared and ready for games. If you ask him, there’s not going to be a whole lot that he’s going to say is limiting him, but we also try to be aware in those situations, and it comes up in the course of a game that there are times where you try to eliminate any excess contact, and Tommy’s done a good job of kind of protecting himself.
I look back early in the season and I think in the first game he runs for over 70-something yards, has whatever, 15 carries, but really avoided the big hits. But as you have things in for a season that build up, just try to make sure we’re putting him and this team in the best position, and I think Gus has done a good job with that.
Earlier this week, Norvell said his quarterback was day-to-day, adding that if FSU had to play last week, he would have likely missed the game.
Kate Finkelstein of FSU Athletics Public Relations put together a feature on Gavin Sawchuk:
His enthusiasm for Florida State extends beyond the field. Sawchuk’s ties to the Seminoles date back to high school, and he credits that connection for making the transfer decision an easy one. “I felt like Florida State was the best place for me to compete at that high level,” Sawchuk said. “I just love the coaching staff, I’ve had that relationship since high school, so getting back in contact with them and hearing the ways they wanted me here and the excitement for that, it was really great.”

No. 6 Florida State soccer will wrap the regular season with a home matchup against Wake Forest:
Florida State is 9-2-3 on the season and tied for fourth place in the ACC with 17 points and a 5-2-2 record after a 3-2 win at then-No. 3 Virginia on October 23. The Seminoles are 5-1-1 at home, 4-1-2 on the road and 2-2-0 against top-25 foes. FSU has shut out its opponent in eight of 14 games, with multi-goal victories in each of the eight wins. Wake Forest is 10-3-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the ACC, tied for eighth place and two points behind FSU.
Thursday marks just the second time in the last five games that the Seminoles will not play a team that is ranked No. 3 or higher in the national polls. Florida State opened the stretch on October 9 at Notre Dame, ranked No. 2 at the time and now No. 1. It continued at home vs. Stanford on October 16, a team that was and still is No. 2, before Thursday’s win at No. 3 Virginia. Additionally, eight of FSU’s 10 conference games are against teams in the top 10 in the ACC standings, the most in the league and two more than any other team.
FSU has scored 39 goals with 43 assists on 256 shots and 110 shots on goal in 2025. In 14 games, the team has allowed 12 goals on 91 shots, 36 on target, with 24 saves for a 0.860 goals-against average and a .677 save percentage.
FSU is 14-13-6 all-time against Wake Forest, including 11-11-3 in ACC contests. The Seminoles are 8-3-0 at home, 3-9-2 in Winston-Salem and 3-1-4 at a neutral site, including a matchup in last season’s ACC Semifinals. Florida State has won five of the last six and is unbeaten in nine of the last 11 contests since the 2011 postseason. The two teams played twice last season after not meeting since 2021.
Wake Forest is 10-3-4 on the season, 8-0-3 at home and 2-3-1 on the road. The Demon Deacons are 4-2-3 in the ACC and tied for eighth place with 15 points. The team is coming off a 1-1 draw to No. 2 Notre Dame on Sunday after a 2-1 win over Pitt to begin the weekend. That victory snapped a three-game winless streak. Against top-25 opponents, WF is 1-0-1, with a 3-2 win at No. 9 Duke along with the draw to the Fighting Irish.
The Demon Deacons are receiving votes in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll. Their RPI is No. 21 heading into the final regular-season game.
WF has scored 29 goals with 28 assists on 201 shots, 79 on goal. The team has held opponents to 15 goals with 50 saves for a 0.88 goals-against average and a .795 save percentage. Kylie Maxwell and Allie Flanagan have five goals each, with Maxwell leading the team with 15 points, 44 shots and 19 shots on goal. Sierra Sythe has nine assists and is second with 13 points. In goal, Valentina Amaral has started all 17 games and has made 57 saves with a .792 save percentage and a 0.89 goals-against average.

No. 2 USC defeated Florida State women’s golf 4-1 on Wednesday, with Sophia Fullbrook claiming the Seminoles’ sole win against the Trojans in match play:
Fullbrook capped off an exciting week as she defeated Kylie Chong of Southern California, 4&3, in the second round of match play on the final day of the East Lake Cup. Fullbrook was a star for the Seminoles during the tournament as she finished in a tied for 12th in stroke play, and won both of her match play events against Shyla Singh of No. 3 Oregon and Chong of No. 2 Southern California.
The completion of the East Lake Cup brings Florida State’s fall season to a conclusion. The Seminoles earned a second-place team finish at the Jim West Challenge and sixth place team finishes at the Folds of Honor Collegiate and the Schooner Fall Classic.
Oregon defeated Northwestern by a 4-1 score to win the championship of the East Lake Cup.
Fullbrook won the first hole against Chong to immediately take control of the match. She won the first two holes, increased her lead again on the fifth and sixth holes, and led by four holes when the pair made the turn onto the front nine (play began on hole No. 9). Fullbrook and Chong then tied the first six holes on the front side leaving the Seminoles’ sophomore with a four-hole lead with only three holes to play.
Fullbrook won both of her matches against Oregon’s Shyla Singh and Chong by 4&3 scores. She was one of eight golfers in the 20-player field who was victorious in both of her match play competitions.
Florida State opens its spring season at the Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club (Jan. 30-31) and play host to a pair of events at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee – the annual Florida State Match Up (March 20-22) and the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Championship (May 11-13).
