The men’s soccer team scored three times in the first half—twice on penalties—on the way to a win at Georgetown that gave the Wolfpack its first Final Four appearance since 1990.
As he did last weekend, Taig Healy got NC State on the board in the first 10 minutes.
State scored on its first penalty kick a couple of minutes later to push ahead 2-0, but Georgetown regrouped and cut the
lead in half on a hell of a golazo from the top of the box later on in the half, and after State went up 3-1, Georgetown responded again. The Hoyas’ second goal capped a wild first half, but as it turned out, there’d be no more scoring. Which was just fine by NC State.
Not only is NC State playing close to home next week, but it is the highest-seeded team remaining in the tournament. The men’s soccer tournament has been so chaotic that if this were basketball, Jon Rothstein would be tweeting THIS IS MARCH eight times a day.
The No. 15 Wolfpack is set to play unseeded St. Louis, which has gone through No. 6 Indiana, No. 11 Bryant, and No. 14 Akron to reach the College Cup. On the other side, there’s No. 16 Furman and unseeded Washington, which upset No. 4 Maryland in the Elite Eight. (Thanks, Washington!) This thing is wide open.
