There is a reason Bayern Munich has earned the nickname FC Hollywood.
From presidents who end up in jail to players burning down their houses, constant public sniping, regular infighting, and frequent coaching changes, unrest and tension amid success have long been the norm for Die Rekordmeister. In some ways, that instability has been the bedrock of the Bavarians’ success, as the club has never grown comfortable enough to rest on its laurels or lower its very high standards.
However, stability is
also vital in building a club to greater heights. Drama remains at the core and will never truly go away as long as the club maintains its high standards, but the last few years have seen the club enter a state of relative calm not experienced in a long time. Unsurprisingly, these years coincide with the appointment of Vincent Kompany, whose calm and collected manner has helped ease tensions at the club.
Bayern’s vice-captain, Joshua Kimmich, believes that this calm has been crucial in the team’s recent development.
“I’ve experienced different things during my 11 years here,” the 31-year-old said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) after Bayern’s 2-1 away win over Mainz in the Bundesliga. “What’s come together over the last two or three years is really special—with the coach, the coaching staff, the team, and everyone around the club. There’s a lot of calm at the club at the moment. Things used to be different. Even when we were playing successful football, there was still a lot of unrest. Now, you really get the feeling that everything is falling into place. Of course, we have to be successful on the pitch—that’s always the foundation. But we’ve seen over the past few weeks that even when the coach is unavailable and we have a lot of injuries, we still stand together. And I think that’s also what matters in football.”
This bedrock for the Bavarians’ success is what is keeping their season going despite all the setbacks. It is quite admirable.
