Dusty May is cooking with gas on the recruiting trail in the 2026 class. Just a week after landing three-star wing Malachi Brown and two weeks after landing four-star forward Quinn Costello, the Wolverines
have added another talented prospect to the class in four-star guard Joseph Hartman.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder from Gainesville, Florida was offered by the Wolverines back in July and he took an official visit to Ann Arbor the week of Sept. 23. He also took official visits this fall to Dayton, Butler, Iowa and Minnesota.
Before his official visit, Hartman explained to 247Sports’ Brandon Jenkins ($) that the Wolverines’ staff has been recruiting him before they were even in Ann Arbor.
“I watched Mike Boynton coach at Oklahoma State when I was growing up,” Hartman said of Michigan. “I have known coach Dusty for a couple of years. He and Drew Williamson brought me on my first unofficial visit to Florida Atlantic when I was only a sophomore. He has been recruiting me for a couple of years now. I’ve built a good relationship with them. They win big, and I want to get to college and win. I want to see how they see me helping their program and how they can make me the best version of myself.”
247Sports’ Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein scouted Hartman and wrote this about him:
Hartman is built like a strong-bodied wing, but has some big guard type skills. He’s a good ball-handler and passer, and can even operate as a jumbo initiator at times. He utilizes his size and strength to take smaller defenders into the mid-post. He can also space the floor as a spot-up shooting threat, knocking down 44% of his threes, on over 4 attempts per game, during the 3SSB season.
He’s not a dynamic athlete, and lacks elite quickness or bounce, but he’s strong, cut, physical, and has a high basketball IQ. He’s played a variety of different types of roles already in his young career, and projects as someone who should know how to play in offensive structure at the next level. Defensively, he’s going to be best suited on the wing, and likely more switchable up the line-up than down, but he should be a reliable team defender and is also a good wing rebounder.
Hartman is ranked No. 12 from Florida, No. 10 at the shooting guard position and No. 79 overall in his class on 247Sports’ composite. Stay locked in with Maize n Brew, as we will have more on Hartman in the near future.
