Bayern Munich is back in Frauen-Bundesliga action today as the gauntlet of games continues.
The Bavarians are rotating through the competitions now, having drawn 2-2
vs. Real Madrid last Wednesday in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and triumphed 1-0
over Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal.
This time, it is back to the domestic league, where Bayern sits perfect atop the standings with eight wins out of eight to start the season. Fourth-placed SV Werder Bremen, however, will pose a challenge.
“Werder
Bremen have had a very good season so far and are high up the table for good reason,” Bayern coach José Barcala stated in his match preview (via FCBayern.com). “They’re tactically quite a complex team: they can attack with three or four players in their build-up, switch up their formation and find ways through short combinations as well as long balls. On top of that, they’re very aggressive in the press and can defend at different heights. So for us, it’s not a case of reacting to every possible adjustment with a new plan.”
Bayern will be without superstar Klara Bühl for a second straight match due to workload management, and Lena Oberdorf and Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir remain out with injury. However, two key players are slated to return: right-back Giulia Gwinn and midfielder Sarah Zadrazil.
Goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic is sitting this one out after earning a red card late on in a 5-1 win over RB Leipzig two Fridays ago in Bayern’s previous league match.
Prediction: Bayern wins 2-1, but the decisive goal will come late. Expect a battle… and half of Bayern’s attention to be turned, inexorably, to Tuesday’s UWCL tilt at Paris Saint-Germain.
It’s Bayern time.
