The San Francisco 49ers promoted edge rusher Robert Beal Jr to the active roster. To make room for him, Trevis Gipson was released. Gipson played 17 defensive snaps against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. He’s played 41 snaps in the past three weeks, while Beal has not played since Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Gipson will likely rejoin the practice squad if he clears waivers.
With a roster spot now open on the practice squad, linebacker Stone Blanton was signed. Blanton joined the 49ers
as an undrafted free agent and spent training camp with the team before he was waived on August 26.
The following players won’t practice on Wednesday:
Deommodore Lenoir (quad)
Ricky Pearsall (PCL)
Jake Brendel (hamstring)
Bryce Huff (hamstring)
Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
Christian McCaffrey (rest)
Trent Williams (rest)
Lenoir is new to the injury report. Shanahan said Lenoir hurt his quad on Sunday. Lenoir played all 65 defensive snaps. Shanahan is hopeful Lenoir returns to practice on Thursday, so his absence could be precautionary.
Shanahan said Ricky Pearsall hasn’t had a setback, but his knee injury isn’t healing as quickly as they’d hoped. A 5-2 record allows the 49ers to think big picture and be patient with Pearsall. And their quarterback, for that matter.
Speaking of, Brock Purdy and Renardo Green will be limited with toe injuries, while Upton Stout will be limited with his ankle injury. Shanahan said Purdy is “steadily getting better every week.” If Mac Jones speaks to the media instead of Purdy on Thursday, that’s a sign it’ll be another week of Jones under center.
The 49ers are opening Spencer Burford’s 21-day practice window.
