In Washington’s preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, edge rusher Jacob Martin has shown his value as a situational pass rusher. Earning a 77.8 PFF grade, Martin had an extremely active night in just roughly 20 snaps, accumulating four pressures, three hurries, one quarterback hit, and a half-sack.
Martin is a pass rush specialist, and well over half of his snap counts on Monday night were pass rushes. In April, I broke down the eight-year veteran’s film with the Chicago Bears last season.
His toolbox is vast, with his initial burst, bend, and hand usage within his rush plan. Before the signing of future Hall of Famer Von Miller, Washington desperately needed to replace the sack production that Dante Fowler brought in 2024. While Martin has produced just 21 career sacks in his first seven seasons, there is untapped potential with his production that Washington is betting on. Furthermore, the opportunity to work alongside Miller and interior pass rushers like Daron Payne and Jer’Zhan Newton this year could also benefit him.
In this Trap or Dive film session, I break down Martin’s reps against the Cincinnati Bengals. Specifically, what he brings as a situational pass rusher, and what makes him a threat on the edge against offensive tackles.
