When Bayern Munich signed Michael Olise, there was little doubt about his technical ability. His creativity, composure on the ball, and eye for goal were already well known. What has become increasingly clear, however, is that the French international’s mentality may be just as impressive as his talent.
Speaking about his winger, Vincent Kompany offered glowing praise that sheds light on what separates Olise from many gifted players.
“He’s absolutely obsessed with detail. He’ll always do things his
own way. I’ve also worked with Kevin De Bruyne, and he was obsessed with detail too. I see that in Michael as well. He likes to joke around with his teammates, but when it comes to work, he gets on with it. He has an exemplary attitude,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That is about as high a compliment as a coach can give. Comparing any player to Kevin De Bruyne is significant, but Kompany was not comparing playing styles. Instead, he highlighted the relentless pursuit of improvement that made De Bruyne one of the greatest midfielders of his generation.
Olise has consistently shown that same commitment since arriving in Munich. Whether it is his movement off the ball, his decision-making in the final third, or his willingness to track back defensively, every aspect of his game has continued to develop. The results have been evident through his production and his growing influence in Bayern Munich’s attack.
Perhaps the most encouraging part of Kompany’s comments is the balance he describes. Olise enjoys himself with his teammates and helps create a positive atmosphere, but the moment training or a match begins, his focus shifts entirely to football.
Elite talent can win matches. Elite professionalism can build legendary careers. If Kompany’s assessment is accurate, Bayern Munich supporters have every reason to believe that Michael Olise possesses both, which is an exciting combination for the club’s present and future.
