As the Wisconsin Badgers prepare to face the Oregon Ducks this weekend in Eugene, the matchup should be shaping up as a classic battle of physicality versus speed.
But, I’m not entirely sure how much physicality
Wisconsin will bring. Oregon brings one of the most dynamic offenses in the country, but Wisconsin has the tools and identity to make this a game the Ducks won’t take lightly. For the Badgers to come away with an upset, three keys stand out.
Control the Trenches and Establish the Run
Wisconsin has always been built around a physical offensive line and a ground game that can wear opponents down. This weekend will be no different. Offensive linemen Joe Brunner and Jake Renfro will need to dominate at the point of attack, opening lanes for running backs Dilin Jones and Darrion Dupree.
Establishing the run early will allow Wisconsin to control the clock, keep Oregon’s explosive offense off the field, and set up manageable play-action opportunities for quarterback Hunter Simmons. The Badgers must avoid third-and-long situations, sustain drives, and force Oregon to defend every inch of the field.
If the trenches are lost, Oregon’s speed and playmaking ability will quickly turn the game into a blowout.
Force Turnovers and Limit Explosive Plays
Oregon thrives on big plays, momentum swings, and quick scoring drives. Wisconsin’s secondary hasn’t been great this year, and desperately needs cornerback Ricardo Hallman to have a good game for Wisconsin. The front seven must generate pressure without overcommitting, containing the quarterback, and forcing hurried decisions.
Wisconsin will probably have to keep Oregon under 21 points for a chance, but turnovers and stops in critical situations could swing the momentum and give the offense a chance to dictate the game. A turnover in plus territory will be the Badgers’ best chance at scoring on the Ducks’ defense.
Win the Field-Position Battle and Stay Disciplined
Special teams and situational football may be the difference in this matchup. Kicker Nathanial Vakos and punter Sean West will be tasked with controlling field position, pinning the Ducks deep, and taking advantage of every scoring opportunity.
Wisconsin must avoid self-inflicted mistakes like pre-snap penalties, turnovers, and missed tackles, as Oregon will exploit even small openings. Winning the field-position battle, converting on third downs, and playing mistake-free football will keep the Badgers competitive in a hostile environment.
If Wisconsin executes these three keys — dominate the trenches, force turnovers, and control the field — they can only keep the game close and hope to have a chance to pull off a huge statement win on the road. This will require physicality, discipline, smart situational play, and some luck, but it could happen.
