If we learned one thing about No. 3 Ohio State during their Week 1 matchup with No. 1 Texas, it’s that the Buckeye defense is ready to pick up right where it left off.
Despite losing several key starters to the pros and their defensive coordinator to Penn State, the reigning National Champion Buckeyes didn’t seem to be suffering any, holding Arch Manning and the Longhorns to just five completions for 26 yards in the first half and only one touchdown on the day.
In fact, Texas seemed unable to develop
any kind of offensive rhythm until midway through the third quarter, when, powered largely by their run game, the Longhorns attempted to get on the board with a 70-yard drive, positioning themselves within half a yard of the goal line.
On 4th-and-goal, with less than a yard to the end zone, the Longhorns attempted a quarterback sneak, hoping the tush push play would be enough for a touchdown. It was not to be.
The Buckeye defense didn’t budge, stacking Texas up to keep them out of the end zone and off the board.
Texas burned through a lot of clock on their drive with nothing to show for it, and ultimately, the stop prevented the potential momentum shift that could have come from a tie game. The Buckeyes looked strong on several fronts, but this play was, in my humble opinion, the one that kept things working in the Buckeyes’ favor to secure the win, making this the top play of this week’s game.
