The Athletics snapped their four-game losing streak on Tuesday night, beating the visiting Boston Red Sox 4-3 on a warm Sacramento evening thanks to a strong outing from their emerging ace.
Lefty Gage Jump was on his game tonight as he was looking for a bounce back performance. He limited the Red Sox to just three hits over six innings of work with seven punchouts. The only wart on tonight was four free passes but Jump was able to work around those and keep Boston off the board.
On offense the A’s
had a bit of a tough time against Boston’s own lefty in Jake Bennett. The A’s did manage to break through in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single off the bat of rookie Henry Bolte:
After that the offense went cold again. It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh did we finally get the big hit we were looking for. And of course, it came off the bat of the recently promoted Brian Serven:
That two-run shot gave the A’s some extra cushion as they looked to even the series against their AL East foe.
Jump finished his six innings of work then gave way to the bullpen, asking his teammates to get nine more outs. Luis Medina did his job with 1 2/3 innings, then it was Hogan Harris’ job to finish things off. He got tagged for a two-run home run to make things interesting in the end but he nailed down the final out to give the A’s the win and snap the losing streak.
The series continues tomorrow night, same time same place. It’ll be another battle of left-handers as Jacob Lopez gets the ball for the home squad while Boston will send Pablo Sandoval to the bump.
