There has been a lot of discussion this year for Germany goalkeepers. There is the old guard in Oliver Baumann, and of course, the notorious return of Manuel Neuer back to the German national team. On the other hand, there are serious storylines in the emerging youth of Jonas Urbig and Noah Atubolu. Somewhere in the middle, lies Alexander Nübel.
Nübel, who was once regarded to be Neuer’s successor, has been somewhat rejected by Bayern Munich and has now spent several years on loan with VfB Stuttgart.
While he may have not taken over Neuer’s throne yet, the German goalkeeper had an excellent season in Stuttgart.
According to OptaFranz, Nübel stopped 12.1 goals above expected in the Bundesliga this season. That is a serious number that indicates that Nübel was a gamechanger in goal, and surely made an impact on where Stuttgart ended up at the end of the season.
With that in mind, is it worth Nagelsmann and Kompany taking another look at Nübel or is it right to look at other options still? While Neuer remains the favorite at the moment, Nübel in form is a good thing for everyone.
