It’s “Sunday Night Football” and the Detroit Lions have an opportunity to string together back-to-back wins when go on the road to take on the Carolina Panthers.
Readers here at Pride of Detroit are spoiled. Truly.
Before even getting to this key matchups article, coverage throughout the week have previewed this upcoming game from many different perspectives. From Meko Scott and Morgan Cannon’s “Before the Roar” podcast, Erik Schlitt’s scheme breakdown, Ryan Matthews’ 5 Q’s, and much more from the rest
of the staff and even beyond with Pride of Detroit Direct.
All of that to say, as I begin finding my own space here I hope to provide thoughts and insights with these weekly key matchup previews that meet that standard set and go beyond the surface level. Digging deeper into not only what the matchups mean for each individual player, but for the team as a whole. Not only what the matchups may dictate for each particular game, but with future in mind as well.
Every week I could write about which team is going to run the ball well and which is going to stop the run. I could write about the one-on-one wide receiver and cornerback matchup du jour every week. Rinse and repeat.
I’d rather not. And I’d bet you’d rather something more than that as well.
Time to dig in.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. vs. Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. showed flashes in his first action on the season against the Jets. His performance is by far the most meaningful development of any individual player through three games.
If you’re reading this, I do not need to give you the numbers to prove the struggle of the Lions cornerbacks not only this season, but throughout the entirety of Dan Campbell’s tenure. I do not need to remind you about the multiple starters that necessitated a release due to off-field incidents. I do not need to remind you aboutthe potential trade acquisition of Joey Porter Jr. that Brad Holmes did not make.
What I may need to remind you about is that while Rakestraw is in this third year, he is just 24 years old. He was highly-touted, and often mocked to the Lions as a first-round pick in 2024 pre-draft coverage. He finished as the 32nd-best player on Daniel Jeremiah’s final big board.
“About Ennis Rakestraw, has never been about his kind of what he could do and his skill set and what we were seeing on the field,” explained Kelvin Sheppard. “It had nothing to do with any of that. It was always about his availability with Ennis.”
I could make this a matchup between Rakestraw and wide receivers Tetairoa McMillan or Jalen Coker, but I do not believe either player is Rakestraw’s biggest obstacle for successful in primetime.
“I learned that I can play in this league,” Rakestraw said after his 2026 debut last week. “I finally got to play in a game, and I knew what kind of challenge it was going to be backside with No. 5, he’s paid a lot of money. Just had to step up to it.”
If Rakestraw can continue his upward trajectory into Sunday night and begin to establish himself as a starting cornerback, the perception of and outlook for the defense will shift dramatically. But it’s up to him.
Ennis vs. Ennis.
“Just like I told [Ennis] Tuesday when he was in here. I said, ‘How much you play is up to you,’” Sheppard said. “We saw a very small sample size. Now lets see what that looks like on a larger scale and we’ll just take it from there.”
Lions pass rush vs. Bryce Young
The next key matchup of the contest I wanted to specifically highlight the pass rush as it relates to quarterback Bryce Young, not the Panther’s offensive line. There are a few reasons for this.
First, the Panther’s offensive line is banged up with starting tackle Ikem Ekwonu on reserve/PUP, guard Damien Lewis not practicing with an elbow, and rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling limited in practice in concussion protocol. With that being the case, I fully expect the Lions pass rush to have an advantage against the offensive line. At the bare minimum, Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill should be to win their individual matchups relatively consistently.
Per NFL Pro, Bryce Young currently faces the second-highest pressure rate among qualifying quarterbacks at 43.5% with the fifth-quickest average time to pressure of 2.56 seconds. On the other side of the equation, the Lions’ defensive pass rush is in the top-10 in pressure rate at 39% with the second-quickest average time to pressure of 2.46 seconds. The question is not whether the pass rush will create pressure quickly, but whether Young handles the pressure well and whether his ability to extend plays will result in explosive results.
While under pressure, Young’s completion percentage sits at 49%, boosted by a 5.01% completion percentage over expected. Interestingly, under pressure his air yards per attempt is 14.3 while just 7.8 when not pressured.
This feels like a make-or-break opportunity for the Lions, who are in the top five in explosive passing plays allowed this season. But with this tenancy evidenced in the metrics, there is an opportunity for Sheppard and Lions defenders to be cognizant of and to appropriately scheme against Young’s disparate pattern of throwing the ball further down field when feeling the heat.
Jameson Williams vs. Ejiro Evero
If you ran to the Panthers roster see if Ejiro Evero was one of the backup cornerbacks being thrust into a starting role due to the injuries of both starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson put them on IR, you probably aren’t alone. Ejiro Evero is one of the better defensive coordinators in the NFL, leading the Panthers defense since the 2023 season. The key matchup here is about how Evero decides to scheme against the Lions’ most feared offensive weapon. Not Jahmyr Gibbs. Not Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Over the first three weeks of the season, the box score would tell you that Jameson Williams has been relatively absent from the Lions offense compared to expectations. But a deeper analysis shows just how much Williams has an effective on the game and how he implants fear deep within the soul of opposing defensive coordinators.
“I was talking to [Jared Goff] about Wednesday out on the practice field,” said Sheppard. “Because Saint and Jamo were like, ’why are all of these defenses going to these 2-high? Scary. They’re scary.‘ I said, ‘Yeah, I’d be scared of ya’ll two as well.’ But the big thing its a consensus around the league if you look at it, most touchdown drives, there is an explosive pass play on the drive. It’s a real thing, guys.”
The Panther’s run a significant amount of zone coverage defensively (85.2%), with the vast majority of that being cover-3 zone at 48.7%.
The question is going to be how the Panthers intend to handle Williams’ speed as he stretches the deep center of the field vertically, stressing free safety Nick Scott. Expect offensive coordinator Drew Petzing to test this matchup early to get as much information as possible as to the Panthers defense.
Critically, defenses have remained committed to their deep shell-coverage against Williams. But eventually the dam will break. Enough Gibbs and St. Brown gut punches play-by-play and drive-over-drive while still resulting in a consistently cool 31 points of offensive production will force someone to flip the switch. When that game comes, watch out.
Will it be you, Ejiro Evero?
Three key matchups. Three opportunities.
