Newcastle United could still lose additional players before the Sept. 1 transfer deadline, despite Matthias Jaissle already inheriting a squad stripped of several established names this summer and asking publicly for more incoming transfers to improve the squad.
Midfielder Joe Willock has been among those consistently linked with an exit, with Besiktas pursuing the midfielder and the 27-year-old reportedly open to continuing his career in Turkey. Newcastle, however, has maintained that it will only
sell at the right price.
According to Turkish outlet Spor Depor, Besiktas has submitted a new offer to Newcastle, but it falls well short of the Magpies’ reported valuation of Willock.
“Besiktas made a €7+5 million offer for Joe Willock,” Spor Depor reported. “Newcastle United is asking for €20 million.”
That means Besiktas is guaranteeing Newcastle only €7 million (£6 million), with another €5 million (£4.3 million) potentially arriving through add-ons. Even if every bonus were triggered, the total €12 million (£10.3 million) package would still sit €8 million below Newcastle’s asking price.
The valuation gap comes after Foot Mercato’s Sebastien Vidal reported last week that negotiations were progressing and Willock himself was receptive to the move, describing the player as “favorable to the transfer.”
“Joe Willock is open to leaving Newcastle to join Besiktas,” Vidal reported. “The Turkish club is making him their priority in midfield, and a proposal close to €20M could help unlock the negotiations.”
The problem at this point seems to be Besiktas’ low-ball offer. Spor Depor’s latest figure is considerably below the €20 million (£17 million) Newcastle has consistently sought, leaving the Turkish club needing to significantly improve its proposal to get closer to an agreement.
Besiktas has already spent €67 million during the summer transfer window, topping at €30 million paid for Benfica midfielder Orkun Kokçu while also putting €18 million on Arsenal’s table to sign Leandro Trossard.
