Bayern Munich is a club built on former players. Alums of the German record champions aren’t merely around to run their mouths in the media — they are literally running the club.
So who of the current and recently departed generation will be sitting in the bosses’ chair years down the line? Bayern legend and honorary president Uli Hoeneß weighed in on two of the biggest names fans love to speculate about — goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and attacker Thomas Müller.
“I don’t yet get the feeling that Manuel
is interested,” Hoeneß said in a Bild interview this month, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “If he is interested, we would certainly look into it with him.
“The same applies to [Müller]. I’ve already offered Thomas the opportunity to receive proper training to become a [front office] official. It’s impossible to end your professional career and the next day negotiate contracts worth 100 million euros and manage hundreds of employees. The idea was for him to do internships at large corporations and major clubs in Europe and the USA. He was open to the idea in principle, but not right now.”
Of course, Müller is right now occupied with the task of winning silverware for the Vancouver Whitecaps. He has enjoyed a terrific inaugural season in Canada and expectations are only higher in his second go. As for Neuer? He still has big decisions about his own playing future to contemplate — whether to continue with Bayern after this year, for starters. And then there is the continuing speculation about a sensational World Cup return for Germany — much as he has tried to put it to bed.
So Neuer and Müller, two titans of Bavaria, are appreciated but for the moment otherwise occupied. That’s fine. There will be time enough for Bayern later on.
