Michael Olise is constantly in the spotlight, be it for his unbelievable ability on the ball or his quirky personality. Over this week, he has become the center of discussion yet again for both: delivering a man-of-the-match performance in Bayern Munich’s Champions League opener against Bødo/Glimt, which he promptly followed up with an awkward interview marked by few words. His interview in particular gained virality on the internet with many fans chipping in with their own opinions about Olise’s
character. Now, head coach Vincent Kompany and sporting director Max Eberl have added their own takes.
“Michael Olise is someone who wants to play football, and the off-field stuff isn’t really his thing. We’d already seen that during his presentation two years ago. Not every person is the same. The media coverage is huge, but on social media and TikTok, for example, he’s being celebrated for that. Young people can identify with that more than us. For us the most important thing is that he shows what he can do on the pitch. And he’s doing that brilliantly. He got the Man of the Match Award three times in five games. I’d much rather that,” said Eberl (as captured via @iMiaSanMia).
Kompany was quick to defend Olise’s demeanour: “Do you think the journalist who did the interview with Michael is unhappy that it went viral? If everyone gives answers like me, then nothing will ever go viral. I can assure you that no sponsor and no journalist speaks badly about Michael’s manners. We shouldn’t mix things up.”
Both Eberl and Kompany make it clear: Olise does his talking on the pitch. And to most fans, that is all that matters.
