Earlier this week, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi teased Spurs fans with the prospect of a big imminent transfer “bomba,” and while the London club have since sought to clarify that doesn’t mean a player like Kylian Mbappe is set to arrive shortly, it seems likely he’s expecting a recognizable name with a hefty price tag.
That name, it turns out, might just be Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo. At least that’s the suggestion of Spurs-connected journo Paul O’Keefe, who calls Gakpo a “leading contender”
to round out Tottenham’s busy summer business as last season’s relegation battlers (seriously, Spurs?) look to right the ship after two difficult years.
For Liverpool, the measuring stick would likely be Anthony Gordon’s Barcelona move, with Gakpo having better career numbers than the ex-Newcastle winger who fetched £75M earlier this summer. Also, there’s always a premium for selling within the Premier League—just look at the Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rodgers deals.
As such, you’d expect the Reds to set the price in the £85M region. Despite Gakpo’s poor season last year—something which could be said for basically every Liverpool player—a strong World Cup, contract through 2030, and that his per minute goal contributions are superior to Gordon’s give them a very strong negotiating position.
If he were to be sold, though, it would put the Reds down a forward even if they manage to get Bradley Barcola across the line, and would require another forward signing. Given how strong their negotiating position is, unless a player like Bournemouth’s Rayan is lined up a sale wouldn’t make much sense no matter how lucrative.
