After leading Arizona triathlon to back-to-back national championships, triathlon coach Wes Johnson has agreed to a contract extension.
Johnson has signed an extension that runs through 2029, the program announced Monday. Johnson is entering his fourth season as the inaugural head coach of Arizona’s women’s triathlon team.
Johnson has led the UA to tremendous success in his first
three years. In year one, the Wildcats finished fifth at the Collegiate Triathlon National Championship. They won the national title in 2024 and repeated as champions in 2025.
“We are pleased to extend Coach Johnson and recognize the success our triathlon program has achieved during his tenure,” Arizona athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois said in a statement. “He has invested in our student-athletes, the department, and the broader community while advancing a program aligned with the academic and competitive standards we value at Arizona Athletics. We look forward to the program’s continued success in the years ahead.”
Arizona is expected to return nearly its entire roster for the 2026 season, giving the program a real chance at achieving a three-peat as national champs.
Arizona has produced seven All-Americans in the program’s three-year existence. Johnson coached Kelly Wetteland to the 2025 individual national title.
“Our team motto is ‘invest, commit, repeat’ and with the support of our department, we are able to continue pushing this program to new heights while maintaining our goal of winning championships,” Johnson said.
Johnson joined Arizona in the winter of 2022 after serving as a national team coach for USA Triathlon.
