The San Diego Padres allowed three runs to the St. Louis Cardinals for the second time in as many games and with that came another loss to the Red Birds. The Padres were no-hit through four innings but eventually broke through against St. Louis starter Andre Pallante scoring two runs, but it was not enough to get the win as they fell 3-2 at Busch Stadium.
Samad Taylor, who did not play in Friday’s game, came through with the first hit for San Diego on Saturday. He then stole second base and was brought
home on an RBI-single by Ty France. The Gold Glove Award-winning first baseman was then thrown out to end the inning trying to stretch the single into a double. France had been 1-for-20 with two walks and 10 strikeouts in his last seven games prior to his run-scoring hit. San Diego scored again in the top of the sixth inning when Jackson Marrill ripped an RBI-double into the right-center field gap to score Fernando Tatis Jr. who reached on a two-out single in the previous at-bat.
Unfortunately for the Padres and the Friar Faithful, two runs were not enough to get the win. Michael King had a rocky start to his day and was made to work by the Cardinals hitters. The early struggles for King resulted in a two-run second inning for St. Louis and they enjoyed a two-run lead until San Diego scored a run in the top of the fifth. The Cardinals responded quickly with a run in the bottom of the fifth after King hit Ivan Hererra to open the inning. Alec Burleson singled to put runners on the corners before King got Jordan Walker to flyout for the first out of the inning. Lars Nootbaar delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to center field, which allowed Herrera to score what proved to be the winning run.
San Diego has scored two runs on five hits in the first two games of the series with St. Louis. The Cardinals have scored six runs on 16 hits and by all accounts, should have scored more in the win on Saturday. The Padres will have to do better than two runs on four hits if they hope to avoid the sweep against the Cardinals today at 11:15 a.m.
