Bayern Munich avoided both a trap game and a potential slip-up on the road, playing on the front foot and converting two of their chances to grind out a 2–0 victory over Mainz 05. The Bavarians now head into the international break in high spirits, remaining undefeated across all competitions.
Aaron Danks sought to balance his starting XI by resting Alphonso Davies and reintroducing Aleksandar Pavlović into the lineup.
The Bavarians were dominant early
on and fully controlled the match, creating several openings. While nothing was converted in the opening minutes, they broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when a Mainz turnover fell to Harry Kane, who fed Joshua Kimmich. The Germany international took a neat touch and smashed a shot past Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner to make it 1–0.
Although Bayern were in complete control, they occasionally became overly confident. Trying to play too intricately led to careless turnovers, offering brief reprieves to a Mainz side that spent long periods under intense pressure and on the back foot. For all of Bayern’s dominance in possession, there were numerous unnecessary mistakes as they grew more brazen.
In the 40th minute, Nadiem Amiri’s free kick appeared to level the scores at 1–1. Amiri’s delivery glanced off the head of Jonathan Tah, forcing an airborne Manuel Neuer into an awkward save. The ball deflected to Jae-sung Lee, whose header found the back of the net. However, Lee was ruled marginally offside, nullifying the goal. Unfortunately, Neuer appeared to injure his foot during the sequence and was replaced by Jonas Urbig.
By halftime, Bayern were statistically dominant, though the performance lacked a degree of sharpness. They needed to be careful not to let Mainz stay in the contest.
Lennart Karl doubled Bayern’s lead in the 57th minute following a precise ball into the box from Konrad Laimer to Kane. The Ballon d’Or winner failed to convert his initial effort, but gathered the rebound and teed up Karl, who tucked away his shot to establish a two-goal cushion.
The moment marked Kane’s second assist of the match, once again highlighting what sets him apart from many other strikers. While he naturally craves scoring, his vision and ability to pick out teammates make a massive difference for the side.
Philipp Tietz put Mainz on the scoreboard with a header in added time, out-leapt by Jonathan Tah — though it proved too little, too late for the 05ers.
