Bayern Munich Frauen maintained their strong start to the season by defeating FC Köln 5-2.
The opponents were coming into the game in good form, having lost only one of their league games so far, and having conceded only two goals.
However, Bayern did not waste any time in exceeding that tally in just 15 minutes. With four minutes gone, Ena Mahmutovic’s goal kick found Jovana Damnjanović, and the striker deftly finished with the outside of her boot to put Bayern ahead. Damnjanović then turned provider
twice, both to Edna Imade, who got a brace in just seven minutes.
The much rotated Bayern side eased off on the gas considerably, and was punished for it. With seconds remaining in the first half, Alara was dispossessed in a dangerous area, and Köln pulled one back. The visitors closed the deficit to one goal after some more shoddy defending early in the second half.
But Bayern woke up in a timely manner, and Franziska Kett earned a penalty that Alara converted in the 65th minute. Barely three minutes later, Sarah Mattner produced some fine footwork to release another Sarah in Sarah Zadrazil. The Austrian midfielder coolly finished to mark her first goal since coming back from her ACL injury.
Bayern maintained a firm grip on proceedings afterwards, and eventually ran out comfortable winners, albeit with a few missed chances.
The Frauen are back in action on Tuesday, when they kick off their Champions League campaign against English champions Manchester City at their new home, the Sportpark Unterhaching.
