Series History
The Eagles have not won a game versus Virginia Tech since 2021. The Hokies have had their number of late, as they’ve beaten the BC in four of the last five contests. The Eagles have an 11-22 record vs the Hokies in their all time matchups, dating back to 1993. Down below are the last five results between the two squads – and it’s not exactly pretty.

VT 2025 Recap
After starting out 0-3, head coach Brent Pry was fired following
the team’s poor start. James Franklin replaced the former head coach, and helped the Hokies pull out three wins to salvage some portions of their season. While they finished 3-9 in the ACC, Franklin steered the ship in a positive trending direction for 2026.
2026 Outlook: Offense
VT currently has a QB competition between Ethan Grunkemeyer and Bryce Baker, the former starting multiple games for the Hokies last season. Grunkemeyer comes from Penn State, who has the experience advantage in Coach Franklin’s system vs Baker. Baker has not played a single snap at the college level, but is a four star prospect with a solid high school football resume. By the time the Eagles and Hokies meet there is no question that one of the two QB’s will have solidified the starting play calling job.
The offensive weapons are decent for VT, but not anything spectacular. Running back Marcellous Hawkins returns, following a strong 2025 season in which he ran for 749 yards and 1 TD while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. The lack of touchdowns is a concern, but he has a clear path of being the bellcow of their offense with Terion Stewart now wearing a Kansas City Chiefs uniform. The other focal point of the offense is Luke Reynolds. Reynolds, a Tight End, showed promise in 2025. The numbers aren’t eye popping as he only caught 26 passes for 257 yards last season, but he is expected to have a much bigger role in 2026.
The Hokies offensive line is still a work in progress. It was nothing short of rough in 2025, as inexperience negatively cost them. They are bringing back most of the O Line from last season, in hopes that the offseason programs and camps will pay dividends and develop their guards, tackles, and centers.
2026 Outlook: Defense
Despite firing Pry just three games into last season, the Hokies elected to bring him back as their defensive coordinator. He brings in a new defensive line coach in Sean Spencer, whom he coached with during his days at Penn State.
The interior defense will look vastly different versus last year’s squad. They lost a lot of players from graduation and the transfer portal, so fresh new faces are what’ll define their defense – for better or for worse. Notable names for the Hokies defensive line includes: DE Kemari Copeland, NT Emmett Laws, DE Elhadj Fall, and LB Kaleb Spencer.
The secondary is more established for VT. Returning CB’s include Joshua Clarke, Isaiah Brown-Murray, and Thomas Williams. They bring in transfers Cam Chadwick of UConn, and Jacquez White of Troy for depth. Safety Tyson Flowers returns after a strong 2025, along with Quinton Reddish returning after missing most of last year with injury.
Matchup versus Boston College
It’s tough to gauge exactly how this matchup fares for the Eagles. One thing to remember is they play the Hokies in the earlier portion of the season schedule, so it may take a while for VT to get their legs going. Then again, the same could be said for BC. VT is looking to bounce back following a bad 2025, and their talent simply outmatches the Eagles in many areas. The Eagles may make things interesting, but VT should win this game.
