It’s no secret what the Kentucky Wildcats need in the transfer portal. They need creators and scorers.
From what’s being reported, Mark Pope and the Cats are meeting, Zooming, FaceTiming, and doing whatever else they can to sign players that fit the molds of being creators and scorers.
One of those players is Florida Atlantic guard Devin Vanterpool, who Kentucky is showing interest in, according to KSR’s Jacob Polacheck.
The 6-4, 190-pound signed with the Owls just after their Final Four run in 2023.
He was coached for one season by former head coach Dusty May, who is now the head coach of the National Champion Michigan Wolverines.
Vanterpool broke out this past season and was named the American Conference’s Most Improved Player. He averaged 15.8 points per game while shooting 43.8% from the floor and 35.1% from 3-point range. In addition, Vanterpool averaged 6.3 rebounds in a season that earned him Third-Team honors from the American Conference.
The Owls made the NCAA Tournament in 2023-24, Vanterpool’s freshman season, but he redshirted and did not play. He averaged 31.2 minutes this past season but only played in 24 games after an ankle injury ended his season on February 15. He’s ranked 65th overall among transfers by On3 and 92nd by 247 Sports.
Coming from a basketball family, Vanterpool’s father, David, is currently an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.
The injury concern is clearly knocking Vanterpool down the rankings, because if he can stay healthy, he’d be a major pickup for any program.
