Bayern Munich’s two big signings of the summer, Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, have landed joint-seventh in the rankings of all-time most expensive acquisitions at the club. Via Transfermarkt, the list now looks like this:
- Harry Kane (Tottenham) – €95M
- Lucas Hernández (Atlético Madrid) – €80M
- Luis Díaz (Liverpool) – €70M
- Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus) – €67M
- Michael Olise (Crystal Palace) – €53M
- João Palhinha (Fulham) – €51M
- Kim Min-jae (Napoli) – €50M
- Nathaniel Brown (Eintracht Frankfurt) – €50M
- Ismael Saibari (PSV) – €50M
- Leroy Sané (Manchester City) – €49M
- Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) – €42.5M
BFW Commentary
It is pretty wild how many recent transfers are on the list, including Brown and Saibari, are high up on this list — and that Brown and Saibari themselves are in the context of the current transfer window considered modest-priced acquisitions and not big splashy expenditures.
Anthony Gordon, for example, fetched Newcastle United a cool €80M and apparently his agent another €24M from FC Barcelona.
All this underscores the real need for Bayern to stay extremely fiscally disciplined. That isn’t always the right play: sometimes, you have to go out and get Harry Kane (thanks, Tuchel). But so many transfer bidding wars get up into the Gordon echelon and Bayern needs to know when to walk away from those.
Hopefully, this summer’s two headline signings will prove to be wise investments.
