Among the biggest stories this week was Jürgen Klopp’s selection of a much-reduced, 24-man squad for the UEFA Nations League final group stage fixtures. While Klopp has been praised for his selections this time around, there was one player who received a call-up that almost no one expected.
That is, of course, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 17-year-old wonderkid, Wael Mohya. The Gladbach talent has been making a splash this season even within a struggling club, and his performances have been recognized
by Klopp. Mohya recently shared the moment when he got the call.
“I only found out about the call-up on Tuesday evening. I was actually at the gym when I got the call, so I took out my AirPods and answered. Of course, I was absolutely delighted. I then told my parents about it over dinner, and they were obviously very happy too – they even started crying. It means a lot to me. I think every player dreams of being called up to the national team one day. To have made it this far is simply amazing, and it makes me very proud,” Mohya recalls his callup, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
It is nice to imagine just how great the young German was feeling in that moment—and for that matter, how any player feels when receiving their first call-up. As special as that moment might be, though, Mohya could have an even better moment coming soon when he makes his debut for the German national team. Welcome to the senior squad, Wael!
