In a surprising turn of events, former Rice guard Jordan Williams elected to transfer to Maryland for his final year of eligibility. However, Williams did not commit to play for Maryland men’s basketball; instead, he will transfer to Maryland football for the 2026 season.
The move gives Williams the chance
to step foot on the gridiron for the first time since his high school days, where he was a VYPE State MVP in Houston. His abundance of Power Four basketball offers were far more appetizing, as he ultimately commited to play for current Maryland coach Buzz Williams at Texas A&M.
Williams redshirted his first and only year as an Aggie, eventually transferring to Vanderbilt in the offseason. He spent his next two years in Nashville, but earned limited playing time and averaged just 2 points per game and 1.6 rebounds per game.
The guard then entered the portal again, opting to transfer to his hometown university in Rice for the 2025-26 season. Williams rarely saw the court, however, missing 17 full games due to lingering injuries as a redshirt junior.
Williams enters Maryland’s locker room as its second linebacker transfer addition, joining former VMI standout Stephen Dean III. Williams has a plethora of familial ties to the NFL, with his father, Jermaine Williams, spending five years on various teams while his brother, Josh Williams, is currently rostered on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
