Help could be on the way for the Tennessee secondary in a big way, but you’ll have to wait at least another couple of weeks. According to a report from On3, star cornerback Jermod McCoy could return ahead
of the Arkansas matchup, which is set for October 11th. Tennessee has a bye week next weekend.
Here’s the report from Pete Nakos and Chris Low at On3.
Tennessee All-America cornerback Jermod McCoy has not played yet this season as he recovers from a torn ACL, which he injured back in January. Sources have told On3 that Arkansas is being targeted as a return date for McCoy. That would give him a chance to get back on the field before Tennessee visits Alabama on Oct. 18. (On3 Sports)
Tennessee is expected to get Jaxson Moi back but will give Daevin Hobbs some more time as he heals from a foot injury.
Getting McCoy back would be an obvious boost for a cornerback room that badly needs it. Tennessee is more than likely without Rickey Gibson for the rest of the year. That’s forced Colton Hood and Ty Redmond up the pecking order twice, leaving the Volunteers without any proven behind them. We saw Georgia take advantage of Redmond time and time again two weeks ago and Mississippi State will likely target him often on Saturday afternoon as well.
McCoy quickly became one of the best corners in the country last season, exploding onto the scene after transferring in from Oregon State. The former three-star prospect made game-altering plays against Alabama, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma last season and Tennessee is going to need that play-making ability down the stretch with a handful of big matchups looming.
Alabama, which will be Tennessee’s next road test following this weekend, is set for October 18th. Having McCoy out there would be a massive deal with Ryan Williams and company on the other side of the ball.
