Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we are talking about Mizzou Softball.
If I had to take a guess, you’ve heard about a lot of football in the past week; let’s change it up!
Mizzou softball secured its first 2027 recruit in four-star catcher Emily Souders on Tuesday morning. Missouri coach Larissa Anderson sent out a bat signal on Sunday night. Note: she changed up her bat signal unbeknownst to anyone, and many media missed the call.
Souders — a Flower Mound, Texas product — ranks 44th on Softball America’s
2027 recruiting ranks and has played pretty much every position except pitcher. She’ll be a good utility add for Anderson and company. She’ll likely come in as a catcher down the line as the team lost Julia Crenshaw this offseason.
More discussion on softball action at Rock M+ from Karen and me. This season is one to watch for sure, as Anderson’s seat is likely quite toasty.

In other Mizzou Football news — Dominick Guidice has been named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Huge bounce back week from Dominick Giudice after a pretty disastrous Week 1 performance. The offensive line looked better against Kansas, but still has work to do.
Like Nate mentioned in the Five Takeaways piece, kansas is a good team, whether or not we want to acknowledge it. And after one quarter of playing sloppy and, somehow simultaneously, uptight, Mizzou found their gear and spent the next two hours beating the jayhawks with the fervor, intensity and glee of… well, most other Mizzou teams smacking kU around in the “recent” history of this rivalry.
Kansas played a really solid game too… A couple passes and they had the potential to tie or win that game.
The 1st quarter looked bad and felt bad but wasn’t all that bad because it just so happened to feature an extremely lucky fumble recovery for the bad guy plus one of the two punts Mizzou kicked all game. And it was over a mere 13 minutes of game time, in a sport where the rules stipulate you must play 60 minutes before deciding the winner.
Whenever Kansas initially took that 21-6 lead, the stadium was completely drained. It made the atmosphere for the comeback even better.
Coleman doesn’t have to do too much work to get his first man on the ground, as his little jump back gets the man off-balance enough to send him toppling. I do think it’s worth noting, however, that he now has halted his momentum with two men closing in. Which makes what happens in the ensuing seconds so much fun.
This entire column cracked me up once again. And that Kevin Coleman deke is too smooth; excited to see what he does all season.
One player who has been a total surprise to me through four matches was true freshman Zoey Matias-Lopez, who I have affectionately dubbed ZML. Originally a libero, ZML has taken a role as a defensive specialist alongside senior libero Maya Sands. She has helped cover up plenty of space on the back line with 39 digs through four games. This includes double-digit kills in each of her last three matches.
Seeing a true freshman succeed in any collegiate sport is always exciting; this is promising for Mizzou volleyball.
Did Missouri’s early season win over kU change your expectations on the Tigers, or is it just about the same as of right now? In our latest SB Nation Reacts survey, we ask you this: What is your record prediction for Mizzou after their win over kansas?
I guess I’ll throw my prediction in here. I’ll go 10-2.
On Dominic Giudice: “I like to call Dom the big, happy Italian. He’s bringing people with him early in the weight room, to breakfast at JoJo’s. He’s kind of anywhere and everywhere, bringing guys with him, watching extra film. He’s been there when it’s gone the right way and played for [the national title.] I think our guys have a tone of respect for him, and he’s done a great job, to his credit, of building those relationships with those guys and pushing them.”
Welp, I guess Dominic Giudice is a big, happy Italian! Seriously though, I do like him and think if he can clean up a little bit he’ll be really solid this season.
Over at Rock M+ we have more Mizzou football discussion in forums ahead of kickoff against KU.
