In case you missed it, WWE tag team wrestling was a big topic of conversation on the wrestling interwebs for about a week in the middle of May. Just a few days after G0mez suggested that the WWE unify their men’s tag team titles on Raw and Smackdown, Geno reported that the WWE was actively trying to fix their stagnant tag team division. The very next day, we reported on rumors of WWE’s interest in reuniting a certain SAWFT tag team from about a decade ago.
Regardless of which path they take, it’s
clear that tag team wrestling has been a bit of an afterthought in WWE for quite some time. There was a stretch in the early part of 2025 where the Smackdown tag team division became a focal point of their weekly show. The Street Profits, DIY, the Motor City Machine Guns and others were being featured regularly, but the writing on the wall seemed evident when the titles were left off of the WrestleMania 41 card.
Still, the WWE proved this past winter that they were capable of featuring tag team wrestling, as the women’s tag team division was one of the most prominently featured ones for a stretch of a few months. It helped that they put the titles on arguably their two most popular stars in Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky, but for a stretch, there were legitimately a half dozen tag teams that were pursuing women’s tag team gold.
Bron Breakker and Austin Theory are the current World Tag Team champions on Raw, and are currently feuding with Seth Rollins and the Street Profits. With Angelo Dawkins left off TV to sell a beatdown from a few weeks ago, Rollins teaming with Ford for the tag titles could be lined up in the coming weeks. Outside of that, the Usos are around but busy with Bloodline business, and Alpha Academy, Los Americanos, the Creed Brothers, and the recently formed team of Ethan Page and Rusev round out the red brands tag ranks.
On Smackdown, Damian Priest and R-Truth are the reigning WWE Tag Team champions and will be defending their titles against Tama and Talla Tonga next week. Besides those two teams, there is a pretty steep drop off. Fraxiom has been around but has been featured more on NXT in recent weeks. Angel and Berto made an appearance in a backstage segment with Danhausen last week after recent rumors that they could be leaving the company. The War Raiders had a brief cameo two weeks ago, and of course there’s the team of Kit Wilson and The Miz lurking as well.
The NXT tag team division has a decent amount of teams currently active, but there still hasn’t been a ton of attention on them in recent weeks. Baylor and Smokes of the Vanity Project are the current champions, but have only had 2 televised title defenses since winning the titles in February. Former champs DarkState and Hank & Tank are in the mix, with OTM and Birth Right lurking as well. Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno have been teaming up recently and last week, we also saw buff Macklemore Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux discussing the prospects of teaming up after a suggestion from Tavion Heights.
So what’s it going to take for really any of the WWE’s three pairs of men’s tag team titles to feel important again? In the same vein as some unsolicited advice I gave WWE creative a few weeks ago, here are the options the WWE has to consider if they are actually trying to revamp their tag team scene:
Feature Current Teams Better
The easiest fix to their problem is to get back to basics and simply feature the teams they already have on their roster. Even after the latest round of roster cuts a few months ago saw established (and legendary) teams like the Machine Guns and New Day leaving the company, there are still several teams lingering on each brand. Would it be believable to heat up the Alpha Academy or Los Garza as legitimate top teams? Maybe not right away. But if they give some of those teams more opportunities to work on weekly programming, there’s nothing saying they won’t find a diamond in the rough and have a team catch fire.
The Creed Brothers and Los Americanos have the beginnings of an interesting story written for them, riding the coattails of what at least one of Cageside’s writers thinks is the early favorite for match of the year. How the fallout of the Mask vs. Mask match affects those teams could be a great way to give them something interesting to do on TV.
There has been some discord in the Alpha Academy ranks, as Maxxine Dupri has been seen associating herself with Austin Theory of the Vision in recent months. Could this be leading to Otis and Tozawa potentially mixing it up with the tag team champs? We could find out soon.
While these story arcs are unlikely to be the main story of any show they’re on, the point is, there are threads of stories with already-established tag teams dangling all over the place, and pulling on one or two of them could breathe some life into the tag team division.
Reunite Former Teams
WWE.com" />
There aren’t a ton of great immediate options here, but there are a few former teams that could make a splash if they were to reunite.
A prominent one that comes to mind is the Trick Melo Gang. Trick Williams has become one of the WWE’s hottest acts since debuting on the main roster earlier this year and is currently the United States Champion. His trajectory has skyrocketed since moving up from NXT, but in a World Title scene that is currently pretty crowded, Trick being crowned with one of the WWE’s two top prizes is probably at least a year or two away. In the meantime, if they decide they want to move the United States Title onto someone else, Trick and Carmelo Hayes reuniting could be a boon for the Smackdown tag ranks. Carmelo, for his part, has completely restored his value, recovering from a run of subpar booking after being a first round pick in the WWE draft a few years ago. After establishing both guys on the main roster with solid U.S. Title runs, putting them into the tag division together as a big time babyface tag team could be a lot of fun.
Another reunion that some in the IWC have been clamoring for is Penta and Ray Fenix. After winning tag team gold in AAA, MLW, PWG, TNA, and AEW, it seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before the Lucha Bros win gold in the WWE. To the WWE’s credit, they have given Penta a really solid run with the Intercontinental Championship, leading to him becoming one of the best current babyfaces in all of wrestling. Ray Fenix hasn’t had quite as much success as his brother since debuting in April of 2025, but he recently defeated Laredo Kid for the AAA Cruiserweight Title and defended that title on Smackdown this past week. With both Lucha Bros doing their own thing now, tagging up again doesn’t seem to be imminent but will be a great moment at some point down the road.
On the NXT side of things, it already appears like Myles Borne and Tavion Heights are more likely heading towards a feud than a reunion. One team that could be thrown back together, though, is Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs. The duo surprisingly never won the NXT Tag Titles proper during their first run with Fallon Henley by their side, but they could at the very least provide tag team depth on any of the WWE’s three shows.
Create New Teams
This option provides some interesting fantasy booking possibilities. Looking up and down the current WWE roster, there are surprisingly not a ton of characters that are sitting around with nothing to do right now. In recent weeks, we’ve seen Ethan Page and Rusev become allies, though, with both men mixing it up with the Intercontinental Champion, it’s not clear if their path will eventually lead to being a part of the tag team division.
Elsewhere, something seems to be brewing with Sami Zayn and Johnny Gargano. It’s not very likely that Johnny Resting (credit to Cageside user MTD84 for that one!) becomes anything more than a supporting character in Zayn’s “Last Real Good Guy” schtick. But if the WWE decides to disappoint all of Zayn’s ride-or-dies by not seeing his current run through to winning the WWE title, a Zayn and Gargano team up could be a fun story on the blue brand.
Could Chad Gable find himself in a tag team with one of the luchadors he has been trying to apologize to since unmasking a few weeks ago? Just last week, I wrote about how the Money in the Bank briefcase has Chad Gable’s name written all over it, and I’m still in that camp. Striking while the iron is hot and giving that man a run after sticking him with some brutal gimmicks over the years (looking at you, Shorty G!) would be a great move by WWE right now, but if they want to play it a little slower, teaming him up with Rey Mysterio or Dragon Lee for a while could help to reestablish Chad as a babyface on the main roster and help the tag ranks on Raw in the process.
Bring Back Old Teams
In this writer’s opinion, bringing back old teams should only be the play if you’ve already exhausted some of the options listed above. There has been talk in the last few weeks of Enzo Amore being back on WWE’s radar, and with his former partner Big Bill (formerly Big Cass in WWE) potentially running out his AEW contract in the coming months, the rumor of the SAWFT duo coming back to the WWE seemed to have some legs to it. Opinions on the wrestle-web have been largely mixed, with most people not really clamoring to see an Enzo and Cass reunion.
At the end of May, there were some reports that FTR is coming up on the end of their AEW contracts within the next 6 months to a year, and WWE has reportedly expressed interest in talking to the former Revival about…. well…. reviving their tag team division. (I’ll see myself out!) Would Dax and Cash have any interest in returning to the company where they put on some absolute bangers in NXT, but were eventually relegated to shaving each other’s backs on live television? Only time will tell, but either way, that doesn’t seem like it can be an immediate fix to WWE’s stagnant tag division.
When it comes to other teams possibly returning, outside of New Day, the Motor City Machine Guns, and the Wyatt Sicks, there aren’t a ton of realistic possibilities out there that the WWE could bring back in to make any sort of splash at his point. While New Day and the Machine Guns especially would be welcomed back by many, it truly seems like those respective ships have all sailed.
So there you have it Cagesiders! How would you go about fixing the WWE’s tag team division? Are there any teams you would look into bringing back into the fold? Any interesting fantasy booking of new teams that you’ve been thinking about? Let us know in the comments!
