Newcastle United’s search for Eddie Howe’s successor appears to have reached its conclusion, with the club expected to unveil Matthias Jaissle as its new head coach with the Magpies set to start their preseason training camp in La Manga.
The appointment comes just a few hours after Howe’s departure was officially confirmed, with Newcastle moving quickly to ensure everything falls in place before the Premier League season begins a bit over three weeks.
According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle
has already reached an agreement with Al Ahli to extract Jaissle from the Saudi club after agreeing to pay a hefty compensation for the German coach.
“Newcastle are set to announce Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach on Saturday after Eddie Howe’s exit was confirmed,” Downie reported. “Sky Sports News can reveal Newcastle have agreed to pay £9.5m (€11m) compensation to Saudi side Al Ahli for Jaissle.”
Per Sky Sports, Newcastle delayed confirming Howe’s departure until Jaissle’s move had been finalized.
Downie added that Jaissle has signed a four-year contract and will meet his new squad directly in La Manga on Saturday after the players already traveled to Spain for their preseason training camp on Friday.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein first reported Thursday Howe’s exit and named Jaissle as the man lined up to replace him after the former Newcastle manager decided to step down following nearly five years in charge.
During his time at Al Ahli, Jaissle guided the Saudi club to back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in 2025 and 2026, having previously won consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles with Red Bull Salzburg.
If everything proceeds as planned, the 38-year-old German will manage his first Newcastle match in the friendly against Valencia scheduled for Aug. 8 as he takes on the task of rebuilding a squad that has already lost Eddie Howe, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and soon Bruno Guimaraes during a turbulent summer.
