In what has become a regular occurrence this season, the Missouri defense gave the Tigers a chance to win against a ranked opponent. Mizzou was trying to play spoiler role in Norman on Saturday to ruin
Oklahoma’s playoff hopes, but in a 17-6 loss where the offense was non-existent, it was safe to say that the overall defensive performance deserved a whole lot better . In a down year that is slipping away, Mizzou fell to 7-4 overall (3-4 SEC) on the regular season as the Tigers close it out on Saturday at Arkansas in Fayetteville.
While Oklahoma made two big plays on the offensive end to put the game seemingly out of reach, Mizzou still had some standout performances from the defensive playmakers.
Let’s get to the latest MV3:
1. Josiah Trotter
The sophomore linebacker transfer from West Virginia continues to impress as he led the entire Mizzou defense on the day with 13 total tackles with 1.5 TFLs. He was a force to be reckoned with and his body language (as you can see in this picture) kept the Tigers’ unit engaged all game. I mentioned in the Mississippi State win that Ahmad Hardy and Donovan Olugbode are two offensive pieces that you must prioritize to return next season. The same can be said on the defensive end with Trotter at the linebacker position.
2. Damon Wilson
Missouri’s defensive gameplan on the defensive end was to make John Mateer as uncomfortable as possible, and much of that credit goes to the defensive end unit led by Damon Wilson. There’s no question the Georgia transfer is showing his five-star talent as he provided two total tackles with a sack and 1.5 TFLs on the stat-sheet.
Wilson is starting to get first-round NFL Draft projection buzz and it’s easy to understand why.
3. Kevin Coleman Jr.
In what was a struggling offensive performance, Kevin Coleman Jr. gave Missouri signs of life on Saturday in Norman and has been consistently Mizzou’s go-to wide receiver this season. Coleman had seven receptions for 115 yards and almost had a touchdown grab to cut the Sooners’ lead late in the fourth quarter. While it has been a frustrating season for Coleman as he’s only had one TD reception all year — he has an opportunity to end his Tiger career on a high note these last few games.
Honorable Mentions: Zion Young and Daylan Carnell. Shoutout to the seniors.
