Vincent Kompany has made the decision to start Jonas Urbig for Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash at VfB Stuttgart and he’s also made a handful of changes to the side that started for the 3-2 DFB-Pokal win at Union Berlin midweek. This will be Urbig’s fourth match of the season for Bayern and only his second start in the Bundesliga, as his first came in the win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of October and his other two matches came in the DFB-Pokal first and second rounds against Wehen Wiesbaden
and then his former club, FC Köln.
Had it not been for a red card suspension from last season’s straight red against Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal round of 16, Urbig might not have even started the two matches in the competition thus far, but he was needed for the Wiesbaden and Köln wins. Ironically enough, Kompany made the decision to stick with Neuer for the 3-2 win at Union Berlin this week after Neuer had come under some criticism for some of the goals he’s conceded as of late.
On social media, there’s been quite a clamoring amongst Bayern fans for Urbig to get more matches at Bayern this season, especially since the whole idea beind getting him from Köln last winter was to groom him into Neuer’s eventual, long-term replacement. Things didn’t work for Daniel Peretz at Bayern after he joined from Maccabi Tel Aviv and things haven’t gone well at his loan spell at Hamburg SV either. For Sven Ulreich, he missed a lot of last season due to personal reasons off the pitch and Urbig stood firm when he was called upon by Kompany, having made twelve appearances across all competitions, more than making a claim for himself to get more time this season.
