With free agency continuing on, the Cleveland Browns have started to rebuild their offense. The offensive line, which was a major weakness going into this offseason, has been worked on as the team was able to sign two free agents in left guard Zion Johnson and guard/center Elgton Jenkins. After trading for right tackle Tytus Howard before the start of free agency, the Browns had to replace over half of their offensive line, leaving just the left tackle position to be filled. As the offensive line gets
rebuilt, the wide receiver room still remains the same.
Most of the targets that Cleveland may have wanted in free agency at receiver are gone, but the team is exploring all options to improve the room.
Trade for a WR?
Free agency is still going on, but that doesn’t prevent general manager Andrew Berry from calling around the league about any wide receiver who could be getting shopped. Could Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr be an option? Unlikely considering how the Jaguars have reportedly stated they have no interest in moving him, but as we’ve seen, situations change. It would not make much sense for the Jaguars to move off Thomas Jr as their receiver room gets demonstratively worse, so it’s likely he stays in Duval.
As mentioned before, the Browns kicked the tires on potentially trading for Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. Could the team try again and go back to it? Could New Orleans wide receiver Chris Olave be an option? Some would scoff at the idea, but if the Browns were interested in Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston, would the Chargers part ways with him?
It’s not hard to imagine general manager Andrew Berry having one more splash move in him; never count him out.
Draft a WR at #6 or 24?
The NFL Draft is not until April. Most, if not all, fans want the Browns to draft Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with their 6th overall pick. Will Tate be there at 6? Possibly. If not, the Browns have other options. Reminder, the Browns have two 1st round picks, so the team can choose what route they want to go and pick a receiver that fits their team.
This year’s wide receiver class is deep, but the fans, and perhaps the team, aren’t in a position to be picky about who they want the team to draft to help their receiver room. Whether it’s Carnell Tate, USC Makai Lemon, Indiana Omar Cooper Jr, Arizona State Jordyn Tyson, or many others, the team has options to choose from with their two first-round picks.
Any receiver the team drafts can bring a jolt to the passing game, regardless of where they are selected.
As always, it is possible that Berry decides that the Browns need to add multiple players at the same position. Draft two receivers in the team’s first three picks? It is possible. Trade for Olave and complement him with fellow Buckeyes star Tate? Interesting. Trade for a receiver and draft two others? Again, anything is possible, especially with the team’s draft capital.
If you had to choose, how would you have the Browns address the WR room?
