The Pittsburgh Steelers got a long of bang for their buck with Jalen Ramsey in 2025. The Super Bowl champion defensive back wore a lot of hats for the Steelers’ defense, lining up on the boundary at nickel, and safety on his way to an eighth Pro Bowl appearance.
With a new defensive staff comes new ideas, which both defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and secondary coach Joe Whitt have in mind. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Whitt said that their nickel spot will be called “Star” in their defense,
similar to what many other teams refer to the position as, including the Los Angeles Rams when Ramsey was helping them win the Super Bowl in the 2021-22 season. The WILL linebacker in sub-packages will be called “Money,” and Whitt says Ramsey can play both.
Additionally, Whitt compared Ramsey to Pro Football Hall of Fame Charles Woodson. Per Nick Farabaugh, Whitt called Woodson after getting the Steelers’ job, as he knows the former Defensive Player of the Year is a mentor to Ramsey.
There were some who wondered if the Steelers would move on from Ramsey ahead of the final year of his contract, but it’s clear Pittsburgh has big plans for the veteran defensive back as they look to get back to the postseason and make noise in the playoffs in Year One of the Mike McCarthy era.
