Following the end of the final international break of the season, Barcelona begin a crucial stretch of matches with a trip to the Spanish capital to face Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano in a huge La Liga clash on Saturday Night Fútbol.
Barça begin a series of three games in 11 days against the Colchoneros, with the last two deciding their fate in the Champions League. It’s easy to look at their European clashes as the most important games, but Saturday’s contest is arguably just as big, especially from a Blaugrana perspective.
The Catalans play after Real Madrid this weekend, with Los Blancos facing a tough away match against Mallorca just a few hours before Barça play Atleti. Real Madrid could cut Barça’s lead at the top of the table to one point, but there’s also a chance the Blaugrana could increase the gap. In any case, three points are a must.
For Diego Simeone and Atleti, this match doesn’t mean quite as much in theory. The Colchoneros are out of the title race and not in any real threat of finishing outside the Top 4, so they can focus entirely on the Champions League and the upcoming Copa del Rey Final against Real Sociedad. They could easily not worry too much about Saturday’s game, but this one also means a lot for them.
Atlético famously destroyed Barça in the first half of the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie almost two months ago, but were thoroughly outplayed in the second leg as Barça almost pulled off a historic comeback. Barça have won two of the three meetings this season and proved in their last encounter that they’re fully capable of outplaying Atleti, so Simeone’s side must get a good result here to keep their confidence high ahead of their Champions League tie.
This game has a very interesting psychological angle because it’ll set the tone for the two upcoming clashes in Europe, and the fact both teams need a win for different reasons makes this a truly fascinating 90 minutes to watch. Anything but a win would be a serious blow for Barça in the title race, especially considering the brutal schedule they face this month, while another loss to the Catalans would put at least some doubt in Atleti’s mind ahead of their UCL tie.
Simeone is dealing with an injury and suspension crisis for this one, with at least four key starters ruled out, including goalkeeper Jan Oblak, do-it-all Marcos Llorente and their best two central midfielders in Pablo Barrios and Johnny Cardoso. The absences may force El Cholo to adapt his gameplan and not be as aggressive with the press as he was in the first leg of the Cup semis, a tactic that completely stunned and suffocated Barça.
The hosts may decide to be a little more cautious and try to exploit the spaces on the counter in this one, which makes it imperative for Barça to not make the same awful mistakes on the ball as we saw the last time they played at the Metropolitano. The state of the playing surface has been a big talking point this week, and Hansi Flick says he’s talked to his team about adapting to a bad pitch and still playing good football.
Both teams know each other very well given how many times they’ve faced off in the last year and a half, so there won’t be any surprises from either side. This one will be all about Barça’s ability to keep the ball and be effective in possession, and they must play with the same intensity and passion that we saw in the second leg of the Cup semis.
Barça really need the three points regardless of what Real Madrid do in Mallorca, and they also know they’ll be facing an Atlético side that doesn’t really care about what the final result will do to their position in the table but will still look to cause an upset anyway.
A gigantic run of games starts now. Time for Flick’s Barça to show what they’re made of.
Let’s dance.

PREDICTION
Atleti don’t need a win for the table but need one for their confidence, and they’ll give Barça a brutal test. This will be tight and hard-fought, but I’m betting on the away team to find a way to get a huge result on the road: 3-2 Barça.
