The first international break is over and the Premier League returns to action as Arsenal host Leeds for an early Saturday kickoff.
As nice as it will be to see the Gunners back at the Emirates for the first time in over a month, the larger viewing public’s attentions will be on Manchester City, and understandably so. For those who have somehow been out of the loop, the Premier League finally handed down a guilty verdict for City’s 115+ violations of the league’s financial fair play rules spanning
a decade. A punishment is still a ways off, but with the “alleged” tag being finally taken off the accusations, the rest of the league can finally feel a sense of justice as they await what is anticipated to be a massive punishment.
For the Gunners, all of the City drama gives them a chance to take a breath and get back to business without a giant spotlight on them. Following a 0-3 battering at Brighton entering the break, the criticisms for their tepid performance were fierce and (somewhat) deserved. It had been two full seasons since Mikel Arteta’s side had been beaten so handily, and it was a painful reminder that, in Europe’s most competitive league, you’ve got to bring your A-game every week.
Saturday will be a chance for Arsenal to prove to themselves and the fans that they have learned from last match’s mistakes with a win. With City heading to Anfield for their first match since the verdict, the opportunity for the Gunners to lay down a marker and regain some ground is there for the taking. Standing in their way is a Leeds team that have proven exceptionally hard to beat so far.

Domestic record: 2-3-0 (5th)
Who else had Leeds in 5th place before the international break on their bingo card? Anyone?
Joining the likes of 4th place Brentford and 3rd place Brighton, Leeds have had an impressive start to the 2026/27 Premier League season as they sit 5th ahead of Saturday’s tie. After finishing 14th last season, Daniel Farke’s side have pleasantly defied expectation after the first month of league play.
One of the reasons is simple: their stout defensive form over their first five matches. Their 3 goals allowed are joint best in the league alongside Everton. Making the feat more impressive is that they have done so while facing the aforementioned ascendant Brentford and the league’s top attack in Brighton, holding both to a 1-1 draw. As it stands, they are one of five teams without a loss so far. Fair play to them.
It also doesn’t hurt that they made a huge upgrade at goalkeeper when they signed James Trafford from Manchester City after only one season with the Cityzens. His 20 saves and 87% save percentage are both best in the league, and it’s a safe bet that they don’t have any regrets with letting Illan Meslier joining the Gunners on a free over the summer.
Whether or not they can keep up their defensive prowess is the question. They are outperforming their expected goals against by a large margin, having given up nearly 3.5 goals less than the stats say they should. It’s one thing to maintain that level for brief stretches, but keeping that up over the course of the season is the tougher task. They are relatively average across most defensive metrics, but sit among the top in a few. Their opponents only convert 4.11% of their chances, which is the best rate by a defense in the league. They also have the most interceptions in the league with 60 and the second-most clearances with 158. Simply put, they are an extremely tough nut to crack.
In the attack, they are a pretty low-volume side. They don’t take a lot of shots, but have a pretty decent (but not eye-popping) conversion rate in front of goal. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and defender Jayden Bogle lead the side with two goals apiece. Should the injured Harry Wilson be fit for Saturday, that gives them another quality arrow in the quiver. When your defense is as good as theirs has been, you don’t need a lot of goals – just one more than the opposition.
If they are going to hurt Arsenal, their best bet will be through set pieces, long shots, and making the most of chances in transition, much like Brighton did to great effect last match. They don’t press aggressively in defense and don’t look to out-possess the opposition, which, on paper, plays into the Gunners’ hands. But their patience in defense means they will be more than comfortable sitting back, absorbing Arsenal’s pressure, and taking away easy looks.
Recent history is stacked against them as they head to the Emirates. they haven’t beaten the Gunners in nearly 23 years, and Arsenal have won 14 of their 16 meetings since Leeds’ last victory in May of 2003. If ever there was a time they’d fancy their odds, though, it would be Saturday. Catching Arsenal licking their wounds before hosting rivals Manchester United, who are trying to right their own ship, would defy the odds and all but push their confidence into the stratosphere.
The season so far has been punctuated with a healthy dose of the unexpected. It certainly makes for a more entertaining league. It’s unlikely Leeds rides this form to a European spot, but sometimes chaos and unpredictability reign supreme.
