Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau jumped into the dynamics of the transfer from Bayern Munich to PSV Eindhoven for Paul Wanner. Hau’s commentary shed some light as to why it was not working out between Wanner and Bayern Munich.
BFW has broken it down into excerpts. Below is Part 1.
The Bayern Munich brass did not appear to be too thrilled that Paul Wanner did not embrace the chance to help fill the void left by Jamal Musiala’s injury.
Lost opportunity
Max Eberl ‘s message to Paul Wanner on July 31 was unmistakable. “He
now has a great chance to show what he can do,” said the FC Bayern sporting director , referring to the severely depleted and injury-plagued squad. Three weeks later, Wanner is gone. Of his own volition. Because he sees better prospects and the logical next step on the career ladder for himself at PSV Eindhoven. The fact that Wanner doesn’t want to chase goals with Harry Kane , Michael Olise , and the like, but would rather play in the Eredivisie, is interpreted in the public perception – fueled by sporting director Eberl’s statements on Thursday – as a sign of complacency.
The narrative that Wanner lacks guts and courage only scratches the surface. If Wanner were a lazy guy who believes everything will come naturally to him, he wouldn’t have proactively asked FCB over the past two years to loan him out for more playing time and experience in the professional arena.
Wanner also might not have believed that anyone at Bayern Munich thought he could do the job.
Lacked confidence that Bayern was convinced of him
At Säbener Straße, Wanner was publicly acknowledged as having “a great opportunity.” However, Wanner reportedly didn’t have the feeling that the squad planners and coaches were unanimously convinced of him and wanted to develop him as a cornerstone for the future.
Wanner seemed to be damaged in one way or another and his desire to stay with the club seemed to be long gone.
Bayern Munich is sputtering toward the finish line of this transfer window, but at least games are starting…right?
