WHAT’S AT STAKE
Now in Year 3, Ed Cooley has improved Georgetown’s schedule with the intention of increasing his team’s chances at an NCAA Tournament bid. The next step is to win some games against tougher opposition like with tonight’s short road trip at Maryland. This local rivalry was brought back to life by Cooley and former Maryland coach Kevin Willard, who has since moved on to Villanova. (We’ll see him at least twice later in the season.)
Maryland has an entirely new team—save for one walk-on—under Buzz Williams. In fact, the player in tonight’s game with the most experience for the Terps is current Georgetown guard DeShawn Harris-Smith, who spent his first two seasons at Maryland.
Speaking of newcomers, KJ Lewis was as advertised in leading the Hoyas with 14 points in the Hoyas season opening 87-70 win over Morgan State on Monday. KenPom and by extension the oddsmakers really like Maryland tonight but this seems closer to a coinflip game. Can the Hoyas find some shooting after going 4-26 from deep?
Will Baylor transfer Langston Love make his debut? Cooley mentioned most of Love’s lower body when giving an injury update in the postgame press conference on Monday.
One last thing and that’s to make sure to give yourself enough time if you are traveling to College Park tonight.
