Manuel Neuer’s return to the national team has been one of the most controversial decisions made by Julian Nagelsmann as the coach of the German national team. Despite your feelings about Neuer at the age of 40 years old, he has returned to Die Mannschaft and is the likely starter for Germany at the FIFA World Cup this summer.
Unfortunately, he might be heading into the World Cup to play his first game for the national team in two full years. According to reports from Sky reporter Kerry Hau, Neuer
has yet to resume team training and remains a doubt for Saturday’s friendly. If Neuer is not fit to play, it will likely be Oliver Baumann back in goal for Germany against the USA.
Is this injury starting to become a major concern for Neuer? Is it really the smartest move to throw Neuer straight into the World Cup without match fitness? If there were already concerns with Neuer going into this tournament, the injury concerns will not help. Perhaps Baumann can prove himself on Saturday and make a last-ditch argument to Nagelsmann that he is still the number one choice heading into the World Cup.
