While Thursday’s game may have been a forgettable one for most Buffalo Bills fans, the team gets extra time to think about it with a mini-bye before their Week 13 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The extra time off also gives players additional opportunity to rest and recuperate, including quarterback Josh Allen.
The Houston Texans’ defense sacked Allen a career-high eight times this past Thursday, which many would assume had left Allen feeling bruised and battered this weekend. Contrary to that assumption, Allen was up on his feet as his number was retired at the University of Wyoming football game on Saturday. It was certainly nice to see Allen get his moment at his alma mater, but the part that should be reassuring for Bills Mafia was the speech that Allen delivered to the Wyoming football team prior to the game.
Less than 48 hours after Buffalo’s defeat on Thursday Night Football, an upbeat Allen talked about “his why”:
“My why? I wish I could tell you that it was for someone else. For me. I love this game. I love competing, I love winning. I love, and this is going to sound really weird, I love feeling like I feel today after a loss. I love feeling hurt. It gets me going. It really does, and I’ve got the chills thinking about it. I love this game. You’ve got to be a little sick to love this game. Because it can take a lot from you, but it can give you a lot, too.”
Like many fans, I’ have had plenty of questions about the team after each and every roller coaster-like performance. And then I watched that 37-second video and said to myself, “yeah, we’re going to be OK.”
As fans we’ll always overreact — to an extent it’s what we’re supposed to do. But it’s nice when we get a subtle reminder that all is not lost, and that the franchise quarterback has the right approach following a tough defeat.
So while Thursday night’s loss was certainly disappointing, I can’t help but think the Bills will bounce back. After all, as fans that’s what we’re supposed to do, too.
