The Los Angeles Queens got off to a hot start, while the Boston Hunters struggled out of the gates earlier this month in the inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League.
Tonight, they will collide at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Ill. to kick off week five of WPBL action.
L.A. jumped out to a 3-0 start this season, which included a 12-4 victory over Boston. They also beat the Hunters 13-3 on Aug. 15. Boston, on the other hand, lost its first two games this season. They have since rallied and now sit at 4-6, which includes a 7-3 win over L.A. on Aug. 23.
In that game, the Hunters offense got some of the big hits they had been waiting for, namely Ticara Geldenhuis and Lexi Hastings hitting homers. Both came in the fifth inning and both were two-run shots. Raine Padgham added an RBI single and Denver Bryant drove in one run and scored another.
Jamie Mackay hit her fifth homer of the year to tie the game at 2-2 in the third. She tried to fuel a comeback bid in the seventh when she hit a sacrifice grounder to score Mo’ne Davis, but it wasn’t enough for the Queens (5-5).
In a fun twist, I will be at the games tonight, tomorrow and Friday. I will try to post some updates when possible and am planning some WPBL feature stories for Purple Row and beyond, so stay tuned!
First Pitch: 5:30 p.m. MDT
How to Watch: Those in the United States can watch on ESPN Select. International viewers can find the game on the WPBL YouTube Channel.
