Todd Interdonato
went with the slow burn approach in building Wofford from the also-ran program it was upon his arrival into the SoCon beast it was upon his exit. Along the way, he found a formula for roster building and play style that worked for him. That is: an experienced core of the lineup with an aggressive approach both at the dish and on the bases, backed by a pitching staff comprised of a couple workhorse starters and a rubber-armed stud reliever.
It’s a formula he rode to a pair of SoCon titles and three top-60 RPI finishes over his final three years at Wofford. It’s pretty much what he has this year at Boston College, his third year with the program.
The 2026 Eagles started with a decent but uninspiring 8-5 start, but then really turned heads last weekend in their ACC opener at Miami, taking two of three from the Hurricanes in a statement series win. They mounted a late comeback in the Friday opener to send the game into extras and eventually capture the win, then after dropping the Saturday game in a close-but-never-led fashion, showed resiliency in answering a Miami midgame rally to jump back ahead and capture the clinching 9-5 win.
Overall, the lineup hasn’t been the most fearsome with a collective line of .261/.367/.430, 32 2B, 15 HR, 11.8 BB%, 20.5 K%, 35-40 SB, which is skewed by their 26-run outburst in a 26-19 win over UConn this past Tuesday. The loss of Xavier transfer Carter Hendrickson (.571/.667/.857, 2 2B, 0 HR, 22.2 BB%, 11.1 K%, 2-3 SB; .283/.430/.438, 13 2B, 7 HR, 14.7 BB%, 9.7 K%, 20-21 SB in 2025) to a hamstring injury was a major blow, and his eventual return will be a huge boost. The emergence of Julio Solier has been the biggest boost, as has the power of Nick Wang.
Despite allowing those 19 runs to UConn on Tuesday, the pitching staff has been the really impressive unit this year. Posting an overall line of 10-6, 4 SV, 4.69 ERA, 140.0 IP, 11.5 BB%, 25.3 K%, the group has been getting quality starts from A.J. Colarusso and Tyler Mudd, while Brady Miller may well be the best of the three as he works into form for the season. The bullpen has some studs, including Gavin Soares who can be a swingman type for this team.
If the lineup can get more production from it’s bottom third then this is a Boston College team that will far outpace their preseason projected finish of 13th.
Pitching Matchups
Friday: LHP Ryan Marohn (JR) vs LHP A.J. Colarusso (SR)
Saturday: RHP Jacob Dudan (JR) vs LHP Tyler Mudd (rSR)
Sunday: TBD vs LHP Brady Miller (SO)
Key Players:
Offense
SS Julio Solier (SO) – .426/.481/.559, 5 2B, 0 HR, 10.3 BB%, 14.1 K%, 7-8 SB. The Puerto Rico native is in the midst of a massive second year surge after hitting just .148/.233/.148 over 30 PA last year in 19 games. If you’re wondering whether the hot hitting will carry over to ACC play, he went 6-for-14 last week at Miami with two hits in each game, then went 3-for-5 Tuesday at UConn.
2B/3B Ty Mainolfi (SO) – .338/.429/.462, 6 2B, 0 HR, 13.0 BB%, 14.3 K%, 5-5 SB. Transfer from Dayton who hit .304/.409/.473, 10 2B, 7 HR, 12.6 BB%, 14.0 K%, 14-15 SB for the Flyers last year. Has solid pop in his 6’2, 185 lbs frame, even if he hasn’t tapped into it yet this year.
1B/LF Nick Wang (rSR) – .317/.403/.767, 3 2B, 8 HR, 13.0 BB%, 24.7 K%, 1-2 SB. Fifth-year senior who started his career at Holy Cross, where he was the Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Year in 2022. Started 15 of the first 16 games last year before missing the rest of the year with injury and receiving a redshirt. Hit 22 HR across 2023 and 2024, but the power boom this year is clearly to a different level.
RF Jack Toomey (SR) – .271/.427/.576, 4 2B, 2 HR, 20.0 BB%, 20.0 K%, 6-7 SB. Like Wang, started his career at Holy Cross (2023-2024) and was the 2023 Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Year and a Freshman All-American. Struggled a bit more last year (.261/.376/.382, 8 2B, 5 HR, 12.6 BB%, 20.5 K%, 9-11 SB) being thrust into 3-hole duties.
Pitching
LHP A.J. Colarusso (SR) – 1-0, 4.32 ERA, 16.2 IP, 8.0 BB%, 24.0 K%. Had 34 career starts heading into the year, including 29 across 2024 and 2025, but is pitching at his best this year. Low-90’s heat with feel for all his pitches. Fiery mentality on the bump.
LHP Tyler Mudd (rSR) – 1-2, 4.24 ERA, 17.0 IP, 8.3 BB%, 16.7 K%. Undersized starter at 5’9, 175 lbs who only had four starts over his previous two years with the Eagles. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but he started his career at Holy Cross (2022-2023). High-80’s/low-90’s fastball with three offspeed pitches to mix in. Contact pitcher who mostly lives off fly balls.
LHP Brady Miller (SO) – 0-0, 1.80 ERA, 5.0 IP, 10.5 BB%, 36.8 K%. Started 12 games as a freshman last year (4-1, 4.27 ERA, 59.0 IP, 9.8 BB%, 15.5 K%). The 6’5, 210 lbs southpaw has been working his way back into form and slowly increasing his pitch count. Not overpowering with the fastball, but has a ridiculous number of pitches he can choose from.
RHP Kyle Kipp (JR) – 0-1, 1 SV, 2.84 ERA, 12.2 IP, 16.4 BB%, 34.5 K%. There was nothing overly impressive about the 6’2, 200 lbs righty (4-3, 8.48 ERA, 40.1 IP, 9.4 BB%, 18.3 K%), but then he went to the Cape Cod League last summer and had an all-star summer. Throws low-to-mid-90’s with the fastball, but the changeup is a true out pitch.
RHP Gavin Soares (SO) – 0-0, 2 SV, 0.00 ERA, 8.0 IP, 0.0 BB%, 55.2 K%. Mid-90s fastball with an elite breaking ball. At 6’3, 220 lbs, he’s a name to watch in the 2027 draft, especially if he can solidify a third offering and then be stretched out into a starter next year. All-ACC potential this year.
RHP Cesar Gonzalez (SO) – 2-0, 2.08 ERA, 8.2 IP, 10.3 BB%, 35.9 K%. A two-way player who also catches for the Eagles (.238/.273/.429, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4.5 BB%, 9.1 K%, 0-0 SB). Has a low-90’s fastball, curveball (his best pitch), slider, and a changeup.
Quick! Fun Facts!
Boston College has had quite the travel excursion of late. Like the Pack, they started their season in the Puerto Rico Challenge, then went to South Carolina for games with Cornell and Northwestern. They travelled back home for a bit – had a game cancelled due to weather – before heading to Florida for games at FGCU, FIU, and Miami. They then travelled to Connecticut this past weekend before heading back south to Raleigh this weekend.
NC State is 37-18 all-time against Boston College, with an almost even home/road split (18-9 record in Raleigh, 17-9 in Massachusetts, 2-0 neutral).
The Eagles have been to just three NCAA Regionals since making it to the College World Series in 1967: 2009, 2016, 2023. That 2016 season ended in the Super Regional round (a loss at Miami).
The Key To A Series Win For State
With both teams boasting some strong pitching, this one is going to come down to who can limit the freebies the best.
Prediction
A team with a weekend rotation of all lefties will be a tough matchup for an NC State lineup that features a fair share of lefties. If Marohn is back to form, I like State’s chances of pulling out the series win. It looks like the Pack is also going to utilize Cooper Consiglio and Heath Andrews in high-leverage relief roles on Friday and Saturday in an effort to capture the series in the first two games. Of course, if one of them isn’t needed, then that guy can start Sunday. It’s a solid plan and one that should work.
Outcome: We’re going to have ourselves a pitching duel all series, but State takes two of three.
