The Baltimore Ravens placed veteran quarterback Skylar Thompson on injured reserve on Wednesday, effectively ending his brief tenure with the team.
Preseason IR placements are typically season-ending, but Thompson’s injury was described as “something small” by head coach Jesse Minter on Sunday. More likely, he will reach an injury settlement with the team and be released in the coming days.
Thompson, 29, had established himself as the Ravens’ third-string quarterback behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler
Huntley in spring and summer practices. He could have even played himself into a 53-man roster spot with a strong preseason.
Instead, Baltimore will now be looking for a new QB3. They auditioned four passers on Wednesday – Trevor Siemian, Jake Haener, Clayton Tune, and Austin Reed – and signed Reed, likely due to his connection with offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. He spent training camp with Doyle’s Bears last year and appeared in their first two preseason games, so he will be able to step in and take snaps right away.
The Ravens also have Joey Fagnano, an undrafted rookie out of UConn who has been with the team since the spring. He beat out former Heisman winner Diego Pavia to be a training camp arm and he now has the opportunity to compete for a regular-season role.
