Kevin Stefanski announced this week that he is giving up offensive play-calling duties and handing them over to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. This is the second year in a row that Stefanski has given
up play-calling duties mid-season. Last season, Ken Dorsey took over play-calling duties in Week 8 before he was eventually fired at the end of the season. The Cleveland Browns obviously need an offensive spark, but can Rees really be the answer to the Browns’ offensive woes?
Though Stefanski will still be heavily involved in the offensive game plan, Rees may be able to bring something new to the table. Rees’ experience as a quarterbacks coach and an offensive coordinator at the collegiate level is unique and giveshim a level of adaptability that will be helpful in this role. College coaches have to be extremely flexible and adjust quickly – something the Cleveland offense has lacked. Stefanski has always praised Rees for his innovation and creativity, which hopefully leads to more explosive plays and an overall increase in yards per play.
On a more basic level, change in the NFL brings a spark simply because it is something new and different. The New York Jets will have a tougher time anticipating what the Browns’ game plan will be. This will hopefully lead to more success and opportunities for the Cleveland offense.
Let me know what you think in the comments – Can Tommy Rees be the answer for the Browns’ offense?
