Bayern Munich is hitting the road for a massive Champions tilt vs. Arsenal.
The two hottest (best?) teams in the world are on a collision course and fans are salivating at the prospect of such an up-tempo, intense match-up. Below is the author’s take on the match (as seen in the Midweek Warm-up):
Bayern Munich is off to London to face Arsenal in the Champions League…and it will not be easy.
The Bavarians still look great, but maybe have lost a little bit of that aura of dominance since succumbing to
a 2-2 draw with Union Berlin back on November 8th.
Arsenal, meanwhile, seems to be rounding into top form — which means Bayern Munich’s hellacious slate of UCL back-to-backs vs. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal is living up to its billing.
Often this season, Bayern Munich has been overly brazen with putting a lot of responsibility on center-backs Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah. Much like it did against PSG, though, Bayern Munich will have to defend as a team to come away with a win. Maybe even more important is that the Bavarians will have to come out flying, aggressive, and willing to attempt to put Arsenal on it heels immediately.
Discomfort for Arsenal will be vital. As a wise man once said, “fatigue makes cowards of us all” — Bayern Munich must make Arsenal defend and battle with all its vigor while trying to stop the German Rekordmeister from scoring. If the Bavarians can make headway there, it could give them enough of an edge to wear down the Gunners and pick up the road victory.
The biggest x-factor for this match is how Vincent Kompany decides to replace Luis Díaz in the lineup. Without the Colombian, the chemistry could be off and things might not look or feel the same as they did against PSG. Bayern Munich’s adjustment to that will likely determine the outcome of the game.
