The Las Vegas Raiders are gearing up for the NFL draft but the first pick should be set. John Spytek is expected to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the number one pick in the draft. Mendoza will be the Raiders’ end of a drought of taking a quarterback in the first round since 2007.
The former Heisman Trophy winner has been compared to Tom Brady who is the minority owner for the team. Brady is a fan of Mendoza’s game and mentalitiy and could be a mentor for the young quarterback. Brady’s
former teammate AQ Shipley was asked by Kyle Odegard of the Vegas Insider if he could see the seven-time champion being a mentor for Brady.
“I really do think so,” Shipley said. “Tom wants to win at all costs. More than anybody I’ve ever seen. So if his name is on the Raiders, he will do everything he can to help that organization. What does that entail? He’s only the smartest quarterback that’s ever played the game. So I think he would 100 percent bend over backwards to take on that role.”
“He’s one of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around, and when you watch his ability to prepare, his ability to see the game before it happens, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Shipley said. “When I watch that, there is so much stuff he can give to a young quarterback. I think he will love doing that.”
If Brady mentors Mendoza during his time as the Raiders quarterback, it could lead to him performing better than expected. The Raiders have Brady as a part of the organization, which has its benefits, and one of them is his knowledge spreading down to the players.
